Chapter 10 - The Happily Ever After

Two years later, the pediatric ward of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital looked much the same as it always did—busy, noisy, filled with the hum of monitors and the quiet heroism of nurses and doctors.

Dr. Elias Grant walked down the hallway toward room 412, holding a tablet under his arm. As he passed the nurses' station, a young resident stopped him.

“Dr. Grant, family in room 412 has questions about the post-op protocol.”

Elias smiled, shaking his head. “Tell them I’ll be right there. I just have to drop off some paperwork first.”

He walked past the room—now occupied by a new patient, a young boy with wide, frightened eyes. Elias paused in the doorway just long enough to offer a reassuring smile and say the words he always said, the words that had changed his life and saved another:

“It’s going to be difficult. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible.”

Further down the hall, near the main exit, a ten-year-old girl with thick, curly brown hair and bright, observant eyes stood waiting by the elevator, holding a clipboard like a seasoned administrator. Beside her stood a six-year-old superhero wearing a cape, and next to them stood Nora, laughing as she adjusted Elias’s tie.

Elias walked up to them, sliding his arm around Nora’s waist and pressing a soft kiss to her temple.

“Are we late?” he asked, smiling down at his wife.

“Only because you were lingering in the halls like a sentimental fool,” Nora teased gently.

“Hey!” Ivy piped up, tapping her clipboard with a pen. “We have a reservation at the pizza place in twenty minutes, and my schedule is tight. Let’s move, people.”

Elias laughed, looking at the family he had never expected to find, knit together by medicine, courage, and a little girl’s unshakeable logic.

As the elevator doors chimed and slid open, they stepped inside together—leaving the hospital behind them, walking out into a world full of tomorrow, hand in hand, toward their happily ever after.
