Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Unveiled

Alessandro stood frozen before the corkboard, the flashlight beam trembling in his grip as Isabella’s words burned themselves into his retinas.
Trust no one inside the house. The leak is deeper than we thought.
The silence of the underground vault felt heavier than the earth pressing down from above. Every drop of water echoing from the damp concrete ceiling sounded like a ticking clock counting down to an execution.
Alessandro forced his eyes to move across the other documents pinned to the board. There were bank routing numbers, corporate shell company registrations in the Cayman Islands and Panama, and photocopies of signed shipping manifests from the New York docks—manifests bearing the official Moretti family stamp, authorizing shipments of illegal firearms and synthetic narcotics that Alessandro had never approved.
For years, the federal task force and rival families had whispered that someone high up in the Moretti organization was leaking cargo routes and skimming profits behind Alessandro’s back. He had suspected treason within his own ranks before, executing two senior capos in Brooklyn two years ago on mere suspicion.
But he had never dreamed—not in his darkest nightmares—that the betrayal had originated from inside his own home.
He pulled a thick manila folder from the desk beneath the corkboard and flipped it open. Inside were transcripts of intercepted phone calls, audio logs, and printed email threads dated three years ago—precisely the weeks leading up to Isabella and Arya's fatal car crash.
He read the first transcript.
Voice 1 (Unidentified): "She’s getting too close to the financial audits. If she hands those ledger copies to the federal prosecutor in Manhattan, the whole operation goes down. Not just the docks—everything."
Voice 2 (Recognizable—a voice Alessandro heard every single day across the mahogany dining table): "She’s taking Arya to her mother’s cottage on the coast tomorrow afternoon. The rain's supposed to start around four. Make it look like an accident on the coastal curve. No survivors. Clean break."
Alessandro’s vision blurred. The air in the room suddenly turned toxic, robbing his lungs of oxygen.
Voice 2. He knew that voice as well as he knew his own name.
It was Victor Rossi.
His head of security. The man who had stood beside him at Isabella’s funeral, holding a black umbrella over Alessandro's head, whispering words of loyalty and vengeance against the world. The man Alessandro trusted with his life, his estate, and his security protocols.
Victor hadn't just arranged the hit on the rival families; Victor had orchestrated the assassination of Alessandro’s wife and six-year-old daughter because Isabella had discovered his treason and was preparing to expose him to federal authorities.
And the police report? The closed investigation? Victor had handled the local precinct chief personally.
A wave of white-hot rage, so intense and absolute that it transcended human emotion, flooded Alessandro’s veins. It burned away every vestige of grief, every ounce of sorrow, replacing them with a terrifying, crystal-clear coldness.
He didn't scream. He didn't punch the wall.

He simply lowered the folder, closed his eyes, and whispered into the dark vault.
"You son of a bitch."
