Chapter 10 - Into the Light

Six months later, the Moretti estate no longer felt like a tomb.

The heavy iron gates at the entrance were still secured, and the black cypress trees still lined the private drive, but the inside of the mansion had fundamentally changed.

In the grand dining room, sunlight poured through the tall east windows, falling across a table set not with empty plates and cold silver, but with warm pastries, fresh fruit, and two steaming mugs of cocoa.

Alessandro Moretti sat at the head of the table, wearing a simple linen shirt instead of his usual three-piece armor. He wasn't looking at a ledger or a shipping manifest.

He was watching a little girl with wild chestnut curls draw pictures with a box of crayons on a large sheet of butcher paper.

"Mr. Moretti," Lily said, looking up from her drawing with a bright, gap-toothed smile, holding up a remarkably wonky crayon sketch of a tall man, a little girl, and a very round stuffed rabbit standing in front of a field of bright yellow sunflowers. "Look! I drew us in the new garden!"

Alessandro smiled. It was a real smile—soft, genuine, and reaching all the way to his dark eyes, a smile that hadn't seen the light of day in over three years.

"It's a masterpiece, Lily," Alessandro said gently, reaching across the table to ruffle her chestnut curls. "Just like the real one."

Outside, in the cliffside acreage where the Dead Garden used to stand, the old briars and rusted wire had been completely cleared away. In their place, thousands of vibrant, healthy sunflowers stretched upward, turning their bright yellow faces toward the morning sun rising over the Long Island Sound.

Rosa Marino walked into the dining room carrying a fresh tray of coffee, shaking her head with a fond, knowing smile as she watched the master of the house laugh out loud at something the little girl whispered in his ear.

The empire of blood and silence was gone. In its place, life had finally returned to the Moretti home.

Alessandro looked out the window at the brilliant sea, holding Isabella’s silver dolphin key ring safely in his pocket. He knew the past could never be erased, and the ghosts of those he loved would always walk these halls. But as Lily grabbed his hand and dragged him toward the garden to plant new seeds in the warm earth, Alessandro knew he was no longer alone in the dark.

He had found his way back to the light.
