Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Bennett Properties

At 10:45 AM, a navy blue SUV pulled into the parking lot of the glass-and-steel building that housed Bennett Properties. Rachel sat in the passenger seat, with Mark driving. In the backseat, a process server named Gary—a burly man in a non-descript jacket—checked his clipboard.
Through the tinted windows, Rachel looked up at the third floor. The blue Bennett Properties logo was emblazoned prominently on the glass.
"Are you ready for this?" Mark asked, turning to his sister.
"I’ve been ready since she slapped me," Rachel said quietly.
At 11:00 AM sharp, Gary got out of the car, holding a thick manila envelope. He walked through the sliding glass doors of the building.
Inside the third-floor executive suite, Daniel Bennett was holding an impromptu meeting with his core team. Vanessa Clark sat at the head of the conference table, looking composed, wearing a navy silk blouse that matched the company’s branding. She was smiling, confident in the belief that Daniel had managed to pacify his quiet, submissive wife the night before.
"We need to streamline the acquisitions for the Q3 portfolio," Daniel was saying, leaning over the table. "I want everyone focused—"
The conference room door swung open.
The receptionist stood there, pale, followed closely by Gary.
"Sir, I told him he couldn't come in—" the receptionist stammered.
"Daniel Bennett?" Gary called out loudly, his voice echoing across the open-plan office where thirty employees immediately stopped typing.
Daniel straightened up, frowning. "Who are you? This is a private corporate meeting."
"You’ve been served," Gary announced loudly, stepping forward and dropping the heavy manila envelope onto the center of the conference table, right between Daniel and Vanessa. "Order of Protection, Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, and a Freeze on all Corporate and Personal Accounts per Judge Miller’s court order."
The room went dead silent.
Vanessa’s face drained of color. "What is this?"
Daniel reached out with trembling fingers, picking up the document. The top page in bold red letters read: EMERGENCY EX PARTE RESTRAINING ORDER & NOTICE OF HEAVY ASSET FREEZE.
"This is a mistake," Daniel stammered, looking up at Gary. "My wife... this is a misunderstanding!"
"There’s no misunderstanding, Mr. Bennett," Gary said, pulling out a second document and placing it directly in front of Vanessa Clark. "Vanessa Clark?"
Vanessa flinched. "Yes?"
"You are hereby served with a civil summons for intentional infliction of emotional distress, third-party liability, and a third-party deposition subpoena regarding fraudulent asset transfers."
"What?!" Vanessa shrieked, standing up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor. "This is absurd! Daniel, do something!"
Daniel was staring at the paper in his hand. Attached to the motion was a transcript—a complete, word-for-word transcript of the parking lot interaction from yesterday. And below it, a link to the evidentiary video file, stamped with a seal of authenticity from a digital forensics firm.
“The video captured by the minor child, Lily Bennett, clearly shows...”
Daniel’s knees felt weak. "She recorded it..." he whispered, the full scope of his catastrophe crashing down on him. "The kid recorded it..."
"Mr. Bennett," Gary added, looking at his watch. "You have sixty minutes to vacate your residential property. A court officer is currently en route to your home to supervise your retrieval of personal effects. You are not permitted within five hundred feet of Rachel Bennett or Lily Bennett."
The entire office was staring. Associates, project managers, interns—all looking at Daniel and Vanessa. The polished image of Bennett Properties, built on trust and family values, disintegrated in less than two minutes.
Daniel rushed to the floor-to-ceiling windows of his corner office, looking down at the parking lot below.

Parked near the entrance was a navy blue SUV.
The passenger window rolled down. Rachel sat inside, looking straight up at his window. She wasn't crying. She wasn't shouting. She just looked at him with an icy, unshakable calm, before rolling the window back up as the car pulled away.
