Chapter 4 - The Corporate Facade

At 8:00 AM the next morning, Daniel left for the office early, promising Rachel that he was going to "take care of the Vanessa problem once and for all." He kissed Lily’s forehead, tried to kiss Rachel, and left the house with the rushed, purposeful stride of a man attempting to maintain control over a burning building.

Ten minutes after he left, a sleek black sedan pulled up to Rachel’s house.

Sarah Jenkins got out. She was a woman in her late forties with razor-sharp gray tailoring, short silver hair, and an demeanor that radiated absolute, impenetrable competence. Behind her came Mark.

Rachel opened the door and ushered them in.

"Rachel, it’s good to finally meet you under better circumstances," Sarah said warmly, though her eyes were already scanning the room like a auditor reviewing a ledger. "Mark has told me everything. I’ve reviewed the footage from yesterday afternoon four times."

"Is it enough?" Rachel asked, offering them tea, which they politely declined as they sat at the dining table.

"It’s more than enough," Sarah said, opening a leather portfolio. "In family court, assault committed in the presence of a minor child by a paramour—especially when that paramour claims to be acting with the husband's knowledge—is nuclear material. Daniel’s story that she is a 'crazy stalker' falls apart the moment a judge sees Vanessa’s demeanor in that video. She wasn't acting like a stalker; she was acting like a woman who believed she had total authority over your life."

"What’s the plan?" Rachel asked, feeling a strange surge of strength.

"First," Sarah said, pulling out a document, "we file for an ex parte emergency order of protection for you and Lily, combined with a petition for temporary exclusive occupancy of this residence. Given the physical assault in the parking lot and Daniel’s potential role in facilitating a hostile environment for a pregnant woman, no judge in this district will deny it."

"Second," Mark took over, leaning forward, "my firm’s forensic accounting team has spent the last twelve hours pulling public filings on Bennett Properties. Daniel has been expanding rapidly over the last year. But here’s what he doesn't know you know: because you helped found the company while you were married, Bennett Properties is 100% marital property. Every asset, every project, every dollar."

"And Vanessa Clark?" Rachel asked.

"Vanessa Clark isn't just an associate," Sarah said coldly. "She’s listed as a junior partner in a subsidiary LLC that Daniel created six months ago. He transferred 15% of that subsidiary’s equity to her name. That’s fraudulent conveyance of marital assets."

Rachel felt a chill. He hadn't just cheated; he had been systematically transferring their family’s financial security to his mistress.

"So what do we do today?" Rachel asked.

"Today," Sarah smiled, a sharp, icy expression, "Daniel thinks he’s going to work to control the damage. Instead, at 11:00 AM, he will be served at his office with a temporary restraining order, a petition for divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty and marital misconduct, and a subpoena for all financial records of Bennett Properties and its subsidiaries."

"At his office?" Rachel asked.

"Publicly," Sarah confirmed. "In front of his board, his staff, and Ms. Clark. Simultaneously, our emergency order will grant you full possession of this house. We will have a sheriff’s deputy escort Daniel when he comes back to pick up a single suitcase of clothes."

Rachel looked toward the window. The sun was bright, melting the morning dew on the lawn.

"Can I be there?" Rachel asked.

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "At the office? Rachel, you’re seven months pregnant. You don't need the stress."

"I don't mean inside," Rachel said, her voice dropping an octave into pure steel. "I want to sit in the parking lot. I want him to see me sitting in the car when he walks out with his suitcase."

Sarah looked at Mark, who gave a subtle nod.

"Fair enough," Sarah said. "11:00 AM. Let’s go set the wheels in motion."
