Chapter 6 - Healing the West Wing

The days following Christmas melted into a quiet, deliberate rhythm of restoration. Nathan canceled every meeting on his calendar for the next three months, delegating daily operations of Caldwell Systems to his trusted board of directors in New York. His primary office was permanently relocated to the sunlit library on the main floor of the Aspen mansion, mere steps away from the west wing.

The first major project was the total demolition of the west wing's emotional architecture.

On a bright Tuesday morning, a specialized crew arrived at the mansion, not with tools of construction, but with sledgehammers, paint scrapers, and restoration experts. Nathan led them directly to the heavy oak door with Claire’s faded gold stars—the stars Vanessa had threatened to paint over.

"We keep the stars," Nathan instructed the lead contractor, pointing a finger at the delicate, shimmering paint. "Strip everything else down to the studs. New insulation, new flooring, soundproofing, and custom windows that let the maximum amount of sunlight in."

The girls stood a few yards away, watching the workers with wide, curious eyes. They were no longer wearing thin, washed-out rags; they wore soft, comfortable fleece sweaters and warm wool socks.

"Daddy, are we getting new beds?" Sophie asked, tugging on the cuff of his sweater.

Nathan knelt down, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "The biggest, softest beds in the world, sweet girl. And you get to pick the colors for your own rooms. No more sharing a single dark corner. Each of you gets your own space, designed exactly how you want it."

Emma looked up, her gray eyes shining with quiet wonder. "Can I have a shelf for my books? Mommy Claire said books are little windows to the world."

"You can have a whole library if you want it, Emma," Nathan smiled, his heart swelling with a deep, protective pride.

Over the next four weeks, the house transformed. The dark, neglected chambers where the quadruplets had hidden from Vanessa’s tyranny were replaced by bright, whimsical rooms filled with pastel walls, handcrafted wooden furniture, safe play areas, and shelves overflowing with fairy tales, art supplies, and educational toys.

To help mend the invisible scars, Nathan brought in Dr. Sarah Lin, a renowned pediatric trauma specialist from Denver, who spent her afternoons sitting on the plush carpet of the new playroom, playing board games and drawing pictures with the girls. At first, the quadruplets were guarded, speaking only in whispers when Nathan wasn't in the room. But children possess a resilient, miraculous capacity to heal when surrounded by unconditional love and safety.

Within a month, the quiet, fearful whispers in the west wing were replaced by the sound of genuine giggles, the clatter of building blocks, and the soft strumming of a piano echoing down the hall.

Nathan sat in his library doorway every evening, listening to the music, watching the shadows recede from his home for good.
