Chapter 10 - Forever Warm

The morning sun broke over the continental divide on Christmas Day, casting a brilliant, blinding sheet of golden light across the snow-draped valleys of Aspen.

Inside the Caldwell mansion, the silence of early morning was broken not by the heavy thumping of bass speakers or the clinking of champagne glasses, but by the patter of four pairs of small, eager feet racing down the hallway toward the grand living room.

"He came! He came!" Grace yelled at the top of her lungs, darting around the corner and sliding to a halt in front of the massive, beautifully adorned Christmas tree.

Piles of wrapped packages sat beneath the branches—not cold, impersonal corporate gifts bought by a proxy assistant, but carefully chosen toys, books, art supplies, and handmade treasures crafted with genuine thought and love.

Nathan walked out from the kitchen carrying a tray of steaming mugs of hot cocoa, smiling broadly as he watched his four daughters dive eagerly into the sea of wrapping paper.

"Did you check the plate, Lily?" Nathan asked, setting the tray down on the coffee table.

"The cookies are gone! And the carrots are munched!" Lily announced triumphantly, holding up an empty plate with a crumb-covered smile.

Emma walked over to Nathan, holding a small, clumsily wrapped package tied with a piece of red yarn. Her gray eyes shone with quiet pride as she handed it up to him.

"For you, Daddy," she whispered. "We all helped make it."

Nathan carefully untied the yarn and pulled back the paper. Inside was a small, hand-painted wooden plaque featuring four little gold stars shining brightly above a warm, cozy house, with a bold, steady signature carved into the bottom: We love you, Daddy.

Nathan felt a familiar, warm tightness swell in his chest. He set the plaque carefully on the mantle, right beneath the portrait of Claire, before dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around all four girls at once, pulling them into a tight, unbreakable hug.

"This is the best gift in the whole world," Nathan whispered, burying his face in their soft hair. "And I promise you, girls... we are never, ever going to be cold again. This house will always, always be warm."

Outside, the snow fell in soft, gentle flakes, blanketing the mountains in pristine white, while inside, the mansion echoed with the bright, joyous laughter of a family reunited, healed, and whole at last.
