Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Titan

The next morning, the financial district of the city was buzzing with rumors.

By 8:30 AM, just as the trading floor opened, the news broke across every major business news outlet and financial blog: Sterling Tech Solutions—Silicon Valley’s rising star and international expansion darling—hit with sudden corporate receivership and asset freeze by Aegis Holdings.

I sat in the top-floor executive suite of the Aegis Holdings headquarters—a sleek, minimalist office overlooking the glittering harbor—sipping black coffee while watching the live broadcast on a wall-mounted monitor.

The screen showed Dominic Sterling rushing out of the lobby of his own corporate headquarters, besieged by aggressive reporters thrusting microphones and cameras into his face. His expensive tailored suit was rumpled, his hair uncombed, and the frantic, cornered look in his eyes was a mirror image of the terror I had seen in my son’s eyes the day before.

"Mr. Sterling! Is it true that Aegis Holdings has frozen all company accounts?" a female reporter shouted, shoving a mic toward his mouth. "Are the allegations of four million dollars in corporate embezzlement true?"

"No comment! All of this is a misunderstanding! My legal team is filing an injunction—" Dominic stammered, raising a hand to shield his face from the flashing camera lights as security guards tried to clear a path toward his waiting car.

Except there was no waiting car.

As Dominic reached the curb, a valet stepped forward, looked at his handheld tablet, and shook his head. "I'm sorry, Mr. Sterling. Your corporate fleet account was canceled at 7:00 AM this morning by Aegis Holdings. Your company credit cards have been declined. You'll need to find alternate transportation."

A collective gasp rose from the press pack. Flashbulbs went off like strobe lights, capturing every single drop of humiliation sweat rolling down Dominic's pale face.

The phone on my desk buzzed softly. I picked it up.

"Mrs. Sterling," Arthur Vance’s smooth, professional voice came through the speaker. "The corporate freeze is holding. Furthermore, Dominic’s personal bank accounts have been flagged for review by the District Attorney due to the embezzlement audit we submitted last night. His credit rating has plummeted to zero, and his high-society friends are already returning his calls with voicemail messages."

"And Victoria and Brooke?" I asked, spinning my coffee mug slowly on its saucer.

"They were locked out of the mansion an hour ago," Arthur replied with a hint of amusement. "Mrs. Sterling Senior tried to call the police to report a home invasion, but the responding officers verified the deed transfer through our legal team and escorted them off the premises. They are currently sitting on the sidewalk with four designer suitcases, arguing over whose fault this is."

"Let them argue," I said coldly. "This is only Act One. Have you filed the emergency petition for sole physical and legal custody of Leo?"

"It was filed at 8:00 AM this morning with Judge Thomas. Given the medical reports from Dr. Harrison and the photographic evidence of child endangerment, Judge Thomas issued an ex parte emergency custody order granting you immediate, absolute custody, and slapped Dominic and Victoria with a strict no-contact restraining order."

"Good," I murmured, staring at the television screen where Dominic was now desperately trying to hail a public taxi with cash—only to find his wallet completely empty. "Bring him in."

"Bring who in, Mrs. Sterling?"

"Dominic," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a razor-sharp whisper. "He tried to call my cell phone twelve times in the last ten minutes. Route him up here. Let's see how brave the titan is when he realizes he's completely at the mercy of the woman he tried to throw away."
