Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Collapses

The heavy silence that followed Arthur Vance’s entrance felt heavy enough to crush bone. For a few seconds, nobody moved. Victoria remained frozen on the designer sofa, her mouth slightly open, staring at the legal titan standing in her living room as if he were a ghost materialized from a nightmare. Brooke’s manicured hand slipped off the back of Dominic’s chair, her nails clicking sharply against the polished wood as she stumbled back a step.
"Arthur?" Dominic breathed out, his voice cracking with disbelief and a sudden, violent surge of panic. He forced a strained, frantic laugh, clutching the document as if it were a life raft in a hurricane. "Arthur Vance? What is the meaning of this? You’re my corporate counsel! I retained Sterling & Vance three years ago when we expanded into the Singapore market! Why are you walking into my house holding a notice of asset seizure and corporate receivership? There’s been a mistake—Clara, tell him there’s been a mistake!"
Arthur didn't even look at Dominic. He walked past him with the casual elegance of a predator inspecting a territory he had already conquered, stopping only to offer me a polite nod. He opened a sleek leather folio of his own and pulled out a thick stack of color-coded papers.
"There is no mistake, Mr. Sterling," Arthur replied, his voice calm, measured, and utterly devoid of warmth. "It is true that your company, Sterling Tech Solutions, retained our firm. However, under Section 4, Paragraph B of the master partnership agreement—a clause you signed digitally on October 14, two years ago, while your wife was establishing the overseas subsidiary—all foundational intellectual property, primary venture capital backing, and international patent rights were registered exclusively under a holding entity named Aegis Holdings LLC."
Dominic blinked rapidly, the color draining entirely from his face until his skin matched the white walls of the foyer. "Aegis Holdings? I’ve never heard of Aegis Holdings! My name is on the building! My face is on the magazine covers!"
"Your name is on the door because your wife graciously allowed you to serve as the public-facing CEO," Arthur stated, turning a page with a crisp, rustling sound. "Mrs. Clara Sterling is, and has always been, the sole majority shareholder, principal investor, and legal owner of Aegis Holdings, which in turn holds ninety-two percent equity in Sterling Tech Solutions. You were an employee with a fancy title, Mr. Sterling. An employee who, according to our forensic audit conducted over the last twelve months, has systematically embezzled over four million dollars in corporate funds to finance luxury real estate, personal vehicles, and... unauthorized domestic expenditures."
Brooke gasped, her eyes bulging as she whipped her head around to look at Dominic. "Four million dollars? Dominic, you told me the company was making so much profit that we could afford the penthouse in downtown! You said the money was yours!"
"Shut up, Brooke!" Dominic roared, turning on her with a look of absolute fury, his composure finally shattering completely. He lunged toward Arthur, his fists clenched, but two junior associates instantly stepped forward, pinning his arms to his sides with professional, immovable precision. "This is illegal! This is a coup! Clara, you can't do this to me! I am your husband!"
"Husband?" I repeated, stepping out from the shadow of the coffee table where I had been comforting Leo. I gently scooped my son up into my arms. He flinched, letting out a small, terrified squeak, but I cradled him tightly against my chest, whispering soothing nonsense into his tangled hair until his breathing slowly began to steady. I turned my gaze toward Dominic, my eyes as cold and empty as deep space. "You stopped being my husband the day you turned our home into a breeding ground for your secretary and treated our four-year-old child like an animal caged for your amusement."
Victoria found her voice, screeching from the sofa like a cornered hawk. "You ungrateful, scheming little bitch! How dare you treat your husband this way! He gave you a life! He gave you status! Without Dominic, you’d still be a nobody pushing papers in a cubicle!"
"Mother, quiet down," Arthur said mildly, though there was a terrifying edge to his tone. He pulled out a second document and tossed it onto the glass table directly in front of Victoria. "You might want to read this as well, Mrs. Sterling Senior. Specifically the deed of ownership for this estate."
Victoria snatched up the paper, her eyes scanning the lines. "This... this house is registered under Dominic’s name! We bought it five years ago!"
"Correction," Arthur corrected smoothly. "The mortgage was originally held in Dominic’s name. However, three months ago, when Dominic defaulted on his private margin calls—driven largely by his extravagant spending on Miss Brooke’s lifestyle—Aegis Holdings exercised its option to purchase the underlying debt in full. As of 9:00 AM this morning, this property was foreclosed upon and transferred entirely into Mrs. Clara Sterling’s personal trust. Technically speaking, Mrs. Sterling, you and your son Liam are currently trespassing."
Brooke let out a piercing shriek of pure rage and disbelief. "Trespassing? In my own home? Dominic, you told me this house was yours! You promised me we’d remodel the master bedroom next month! You said Clara was just a ghost who was never coming back!"
"I was coming back, Brooke," I said, walking slowly toward the front door while carrying Leo safely in my arms. The boy finally buried his face into the crook of my neck, his tiny hands clutching my jacket lapel with a desperate, crushing grip. "And I brought receipts for every single broken promise, every dollar stolen, and every second of abuse my son suffered under your roof."
Dominic struggled against the firm grip of the lawyers, his face purple with rage, tears of humiliation springing to his eyes. "Clara! Please! We can talk about this! We can fix this! Don't ruin everything we built together! Think of our history!"

I paused at the threshold of the door, looking back at the three people who had spent the last two years plotting my destruction and my son's erasure.
"History is written by the survivors, Dominic," I said softly. "And right now, you're unemployed, homeless, and facing criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and child endangerment. Pack your bags. You have two hours before the locks are changed."
