Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper’s Secret

The heavy oak doors of the drawing room clicked shut behind Thomas and the weeping, furious Vivian. The room felt lighter, yet charged with an emotional exhaustion that seemed to drag everyone down.

Hannah Reed remained frozen near the fireplace, her hands resting protectively on Emma’s shoulders. She looked like she wanted to evaporate.

"Mr. Hale," Hannah began, her voice trembling slightly. "I... I think I should collect our things and leave too. With everything happening, you need privacy."

Roman turned away from the window where he had been watching the tail lights of Thomas's unmarked car disappear down the private drive. He looked at the modest, quiet woman who had worked in his home for the past three months without a single complaint.

"Why would you leave, Hannah?" Roman asked.

"Because I'm just a housekeeper, sir. And this is a dangerous place. I didn't know... none of us knew what Vivian was doing."

Roman walked over to the low coffee table where the battered teddy bear still lay beside the open sewing box. He picked up the toy, running his thumb over Emma's crooked, clumsy stitches.

"You fixed my daughter's bear when no one else could," Roman said quietly. "And your little girl has better instincts than my entire security detail. Stay, Hannah. The estate needs people who can be trusted."

Hannah looked down at Emma, who nodded solemnly up at her mother.

"Thank you, Mr. Hale," Hannah whispered.

That evening, the massive Hale estate felt different. The oppressive shadow that had hung over the halls for eleven months—the phantom weight of Claire’s unexplained absence—was gone. In its place was a sharp, painful truth, but one that finally allowed them to breathe.

Later that night, long after Lily had fallen asleep holding the repaired teddy bear against her chest, Roman sat in his private study on the third floor. The room was dark except for the amber glow of the desk lamp.

He opened the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk and pulled out a thick manila folder labeled Internal Audit - Sloan. Inside were financial records, property deeds, and a series of encrypted emails that Vivian had tried to scrub from the estate's server.

As Roman flipped through the pages, a folded piece of paper slipped out and fluttered to the floor.

He picked it up. It was handwriting he recognized instantly. Claire's handwriting.

“Roman, if you're reading this, it means I found the safe in Vivian's quarters. She's been working with your rival, Marcus Vance. They're planning a hostile takeover of the shipping ports through forged signatures. If anything happens to me, look behind the library portrait.”

Roman’s eyes narrowed. Marcus Vance. His oldest, most ruthless competitor in the Chicago underworld.

Vivian hasn't just been acting out of jealousy; she had been acting as an inside plant for Vance.
