Chapter 10 - The Last Whisper

The golden hues of the setting sun painted the Chicago skyline in shades of amber and violet as evening settled over the Hale estate.
Inside the nursery on the second floor, the room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp.
Lily sat propped up against her pillows, looking tired and content. The cream-colored teddy bear rested beside her hip, its repaired ear proudly standing upright.
Roman sat in the armchair beside the bed, finishing the final chapter of a storybook.
"And they lived happily ever after," Roman read, closing the book and setting it on the nightstand.
Lily yawned, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. "Daddy?"
"Yes, bug?"
"Do you think Mommy knows we fixed her bear?"
Roman smiled gently, smoothing a lock of dark hair away from his daughter's forehead. He thought about the recording they had found hidden inside the toy months ago—the voice that had saved them from the shadows and brought the truth into the light.
"I think she knows, Lily," Roman answered softly, his voice steady and filled with quiet peace. "I think she’s been watching us the whole time, smiling because she knew we were strong enough to make it through."
Lily smiled sleepily, pulling the teddy bear tight against her chest. "Good. Because we have a really good family now."
"We do, bug," Roman whispered. "We really do."
He leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to her forehead as her eyelids drifted shut.
As Roman walked quietly toward the bedroom door, turning off the bedside lamp, a gentle evening breeze drifted through the half-open window, rustling the curtains. For a fleeting second, the faint, familiar scent of lavender and old paper—Claire's favorite perfume—seemed to linger in the air, warm and comforting.
Roman paused by the door, looking back one last time at his sleeping daughter and her loyal, crooked-stitched bear.

He smiled, turned off the hallway light, and closed the door softly behind him.
The house was quiet. The war was won. And the future was finally theirs.
