Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in Westchester

The morning sun filtered brightly through the double-paned windows of the Westchester house, casting warm golden patterns across hardwood floors that didn't squeak, creak, or smell of dampness.

Emma was currently sitting cross-legged on a plush, cream-colored rug in the living room, surrounded by three different cardboard boxes filled with brand-new toys, a miniature bookshelf stuffed with fairy tales, and a plush stuffed rabbit twice the size of the one she had carried in her backpack.

I stood in the modern, stainless-steel kitchen, watching her through the open archway while I brewed fresh coffee.

It still felt like an elaborate dream—or a trap that was about to snap shut. But when the local pharmacy delivery driver arrived at eight o'clock sharp with a three-year supply of Emma’s controller medications, all fully prepaid with a polite nod and a receipt bearing the seal of Moretti Holdings, reality finally began to settle in.

My phone buzzed on the granite countertop.

An unknown number. I swiped the screen and pressed it to my ear.

"Clara," Alessandro’s deep, measured voice came through the speaker.

"Mr. Moretti," I answered, instinctively standing up a little straighter. "We... we received the delivery. Thank you. I don't even know how to begin to—"

"Don't," he interrupted smoothly. "Just settle in. Tomorrow at nine, Marcus will pick you up and bring you to the Manhattan office. We have an entire portfolio of community health initiatives to review, and I expect you to bring plenty of ideas on how to fix the broken systems you used to navigate."

"I'll be ready," I said, a genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in years.

"Good. And Clara?"

"Yes?"

"Tell Emma her rabbit necklace looks good on her."

The line went dead with a soft click.

I lowered the phone, looking back into the living room where my daughter was happily hugging her giant new stuffed rabbit, breathing easily, deeply, and without a single wheeze. The shadow of Blackwater House was behind us, but the future—bright, secure, and entirely our own—was finally beginning to unfold.
