Chapter 8 - The Ledger of Secrets

The silence in the boardroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents three floors above.

Graham Voss gripped the edge of the walnut table so hard his knuckles turned white. His eyes darted frantically around the room, looking for the security detail he had paid off just twelve hours ago—the same enforcering team that was currently tied up in the dark sub-basement beneath the North Shore estate.

“You... you’re trespassing,” Graham stammered, his professional composure completely unraveling. “This is a closed executive session. You have no legal right to—”

“Legal right?” Silas interrupted, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that made seasoned criminals beg for mercy. He slid a thick black leather ledger across the glass table—the very ledger Mara had recovered from Graham’s private vault. “Let’s talk about legal rights, Graham. Shall we discuss the offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands? Or perhaps the systematic embezzlement of the employee pension funds over the last three years?”

Graham flinched as if he had been struck physically.

“Every fraudulent signature,” Silas continued, opening the ledger to a bookmarked page covered in red ink annotations, “every unauthorized wire transfer, and every forged proxy document you drafted while pretending to be my most loyal advisor is documented right here. Not by an auditor. By someone who actually pays attention to the details.”

Silas tilted his head toward Mara, who was calmly helping Poppy sip apple juice from a straw in the corner of the room.

“You left your desk open, Graham,” Mara said mildly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent boardroom. “And you always used the same passcode for your encrypted files: your dog’s birthday. Lack of imagination is a dangerous flaw in a corporate lawyer.”

A murmur broke out among the board members. Several senior executives stood up, backing away from Graham as if he carried a contagious disease.

“Guards!” Graham shouted hysterically, standing up and backing toward the double doors. “Someone remove them! This is a hostile takeover!”

The doors opened—not by Graham's men, but by four federal agents wearing dark tactical vests, accompanied by two Chicago police detectives.

“Graham Voss?” the lead detective asked, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. “You’re under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder.”

“No! This is a setup! Silas framed me!” Graham shrieked, thrashing as the handcuffs snapped securely around his wrists.

“Take him out of my sight,” Silas said flatly, not even bothering to look at his former lawyer as federal agents hauled the sputtering, ruined man out of the boardroom.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.

For a long moment, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence, looking back and forth between Silas Marino and the quiet, composed woman standing by the window.

Silas cleared his throat, adjusting his cuffs. “Meeting adjourned. Let’s get back to work.”
