Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Decree

The golden autumn sun bathed the North Shore estate in a warm, amber glow, turning the sprawling lawns into a sea of orange and gold.

On the wide stone terrace overlooking Lake Michigan, a small celebration was underway. There were no mob bosses, no corrupt politicians, and no trembling accountants. Just a few trusted friends, a table laden with fresh pastries, and a very serious three-year-old girl presiding over the proceedings.

Poppy Ellison sat at the center of the patio table, wearing her official, upgraded construction-paper crown—now reinforced with actual gold foil that Silas had specially ordered from a jeweler downtown.

“Your majesty,” Silas said, bowing slightly as he approached her seat holding a small plate of sliced strawberries.

Poppy narrowed her eyes critically, inspecting him from head to toe. “Did you brush your teeth?”

“Thoroughly,” Silas replied with a straight face, placing the plate before her.

“Good,” Poppy nodded with solemn authority. Then she pointed a sticky finger toward Mara, who was standing nearby laughing with the head housekeeper. “And Mama gets the biggest strawberry because she helped carry the heavy boxes.”

“Agreed,” Silas smiled, turning to look at Mara as she walked over to join them.

Mara wore a simple, elegant emerald-green dress, her hair catching the afternoon breeze. The shadows of her past life had finally faded, replaced by the quiet confidence of a woman who no longer needed to hide in the background of anyone’s story.

Silas reached out, gently taking her hand in his. Mara didn't pull away. Instead, she laced her fingers through his, feeling the strong, steady pulse of a man who had survived a coup, a basement prison, and a toddler with kindergarten scissors—and had found something far more valuable than an empire along the way.

From the grass below, Poppy held up a brand-new, unbroken pair of pink safety scissors, waving them triumphantly in the air like a scepter.

“All fixed!” the toddler announced proudly.

Silas laughed, pulling Mara just a fraction closer as the lake breeze washed over them.

The conspiracy was broken. The empire was secure. And the most dangerous man in Chicago had finally surrendered to the best team he had ever hired.
