Part 3 – The Woman Behind the Poison

Part 3 – The Woman Behind the Poison

The underground bunker had no windows.

No sunrise.

No sunset.

Only cold white lights and the quiet hum of powerful servers reminded its occupants that time was still moving.

Meredith hadn't slept.

She sat beside Phoebe's bed, gently brushing a loose strand of hair away from the little girl's face. After everything that had happened, Phoebe had finally fallen into a peaceful sleep, clutching her faded teddy bear as though it alone could keep the nightmares away.

A soft knock echoed through the room.

Meredith looked up.

"Come in."

The heavy steel door opened.

Jasper stepped inside.

He had changed out of the clothes he'd worn during the escape, but exhaustion lingered beneath his composed expression. His usually perfect appearance had begun to crack. His tie was gone, the sleeves of his black shirt were rolled to his elbows, and dark circles framed his eyes.

"You should rest," Meredith said quietly.

"So should you."

Neither of them moved.

After a long silence, Jasper glanced toward Phoebe.

"She looks peaceful."

"She's exhausted."

He nodded.

"So am I."

Meredith noticed something different about him.

The commanding Mafia boss who terrified politicians and businessmen alike looked...human.

For the first time.

Jasper finally spoke.

"I received the first report."

"And?"

"It changes everything."

One floor below, Dominic Hayes spread dozens of photographs across the conference table.

The room was occupied only by Jasper, Meredith, Dominic, and two of Jasper's oldest security advisers.

A digital screen displayed one photograph.

GENEVIEVE ASHFORD

Age: 31.

Education: Elite boarding schools.

Career: Investment consultant.

Charity ambassador.

Public speaker.

Every record appeared flawless.

Dominic pressed another key.

The image changed.

A different woman appeared.

Dark brown hair.

Different makeup.

Different name.

EMILY CARTER

Meredith stared.

"It's her."

Dominic nodded.

"Facial recognition confirms a ninety-eight percent match."

Jasper remained silent.

Dominic continued.

"Emily Carter disappeared six years ago after working as a private financial adviser for an elderly billionaire in Chicago."

"What happened to him?" Meredith asked.

"He died unexpectedly."

"Natural causes?"

"The investigation said yes."

"But?"

Dominic slid another document across the table.

"The case was quietly reopened two years later."

"No evidence was ever strong enough for charges."

Meredith slowly looked toward Jasper.

"She changed her identity."

"Yes."

"And came after you."

Jasper folded his hands together.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"She came after my fortune."

Dominic clicked through another series of files.

"This wasn't her first attempt."

Three photographs appeared side by side.

Three wealthy men.

Three different cities.

Three different years.

Each had one thing in common.

All had become engaged to Genevieve—or Emily—less than a year before tragedy struck.

One suffered a devastating financial collapse after signing power-of-attorney documents.

Another died before the wedding from what authorities believed was a sudden medical emergency.

The third survived, but later admitted that his fiancée had tried to isolate him from everyone he trusted before disappearing with millions of dollars.

Meredith felt cold.

"She's been doing this for years."

Dominic nodded.

"She never steals quickly."

"She studies."

"She waits."

"She becomes indispensable."

"And then..."

Jasper finished the sentence.

"...she removes anyone standing between her and complete control."

No one spoke.

The realization settled over the room like heavy fog.

Phoebe had never been the ultimate target.

She had simply been the greatest obstacle.

At Blackwood Manor...

Genevieve calmly sipped tea in the breakfast room.

The household staff exchanged nervous glances.

Mr. Blackwood had vanished overnight.

Phoebe was nowhere to be found.

The estate's normal security team had suddenly been replaced by unfamiliar guards.

No one understood what was happening.

Genevieve smiled pleasantly.

"Has Mr. Blackwood called?"

"No, Miss Ashford."

"I see."

She stirred her tea once.

"He must be very busy."

Inside...

She was calculating every possibility.

Jasper had not returned.

That meant one thing.

He was hiding.

And Jasper Blackwood only hid when he believed someone had declared war.

Her smile slowly faded.

"So..."

"You finally noticed."

Miles away...

Meredith wandered into the small underground library while Phoebe played safely in the children's room with two female security officers.

She stopped in front of a bookshelf.

Hundreds of titles.

History.

Business.

Military strategy.

Psychology.

She smiled faintly.

"I didn't expect this."

"You expected weapons?"

Jasper's voice came from behind her.

She turned.

"A little."

"There are weapons."

"Somewhere else."

Meredith laughed softly.

The sound surprised both of them.

It was the first genuine laugh either had heard in days.

Jasper found himself smiling before realizing it.

Then the smile disappeared almost immediately.

He wasn't used to moments like this anymore.

"Thank you," he said.

Meredith frowned.

"For what?"

"For making Phoebe laugh this morning."

Meredith looked toward the hallway where the little girl's laughter echoed faintly.

"Children deserve to laugh."

"They do."

"I forgot that."

His confession hung in the air.

Meredith turned to face him fully.

"You didn't forget."

"You were surviving."

Jasper looked at her.

"No."

"I was hiding behind work."

He lowered his voice.

"After Evelyn died..."

"...I convinced myself providing safety was enough."

"I built walls."

"I built an empire."

"I built armies."

"But I forgot she needed..."

He glanced toward Phoebe.

"...a father."

Meredith said nothing.

Sometimes silence offered more comfort than words.

That afternoon...

Dominic entered the bunker carrying another file.

His expression was far more serious this time.

"We found something else."

Jasper immediately stood.

"What?"

Dominic placed several old photographs onto the table.

One showed Genevieve standing beside an elegant older woman.

Another showed the same woman entering a courthouse.

A third captured her speaking with reporters.

Meredith frowned.

"Who is she?"

Dominic answered quietly.

"Eleanor Ashford."

"Genevieve's mother?"

"No."

"Her first victim."

The room fell silent.

"Eleanor Ashford was a wealthy widow with no children."

"Eight years ago she legally adopted a twenty-three-year-old woman named Emily Carter."

Meredith's eyes widened.

"Genevieve..."

"...was never born an Ashford."

Dominic nodded.

"She inherited the Ashford name."

"And six months later..."

He paused.

"Eleanor Ashford died."

Jasper slowly closed the file.

"This wasn't chance."

"No."

"It was preparation."

Years of preparation.

Years of carefully creating a new identity.

Years of learning how powerful families operated.

Years of waiting for someone like Jasper Blackwood.

Late that evening...

Phoebe wandered into Jasper's office carrying crayons.

"Daddy?"

He looked up from a mountain of investigation files.

"Yes, Princess?"

"Will you color with me?"

He glanced at the papers.

Then at his daughter.

Then slowly closed every file.

"Of course."

For nearly thirty minutes...

The feared Mafia boss colored castles, flowers, and smiling stick figures beside his four-year-old daughter.

Meredith watched quietly from the doorway.

Phoebe suddenly held up her drawing.

"It's us!"

Jasper smiled.

Three figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun.

One tall man.

One little girl.

One woman with long brown hair.

Jasper looked carefully.

"Who's she?"

Phoebe answered without hesitation.

"Meri."

The room became quiet.

Phoebe pointed to the drawing again.

"We're a family."

Meredith's heart skipped.

Jasper looked at the picture much longer than expected.

He didn't correct his daughter.

He simply stared.

Somewhere deep inside...

A feeling he had buried after Evelyn's death stirred for the first time.

Hope.

Meanwhile...

Genevieve entered a luxury hotel suite downtown.

Someone was already waiting.

A sharply dressed man in his forties.

Silver hair.

Cold blue eyes.

He remained seated.

"I wondered when you'd call."

Genevieve poured herself a glass of water.

"I have a problem."

"So I heard."

"The child escaped."

"And?"

"Jasper disappeared."

The man smiled.

"Interesting."

"He suspects me."

"Does he have proof?"

"Not enough."

The man leaned back.

"Then why are you nervous?"

Genevieve looked toward the city lights.

"I'm not nervous."

"I'm...curious."

"About what?"

"The nanny."

She turned.

"Meredith Cole."

"She ruined months of planning."

The man laughed quietly.

"You've never liked surprises."

"No."

"And now?"

Genevieve's expression became colder than winter.

"I want to know everything about her."

"If she's ordinary..."

"...she'll break."

"And if she isn't?"

Genevieve's smile returned.

"Then this game just became interesting."

Back inside the bunker...

Dominic approached Jasper once more.

"One last thing."

"What is it?"

"Our people interviewed everyone who knew Meredith."

"And?"

"They all said the same thing."

Jasper looked up.

"She always protects children."

"No matter the cost."

"She volunteers."

"She donates."

"She visits foster homes."

"Even after working twelve-hour shifts."

Meredith looked embarrassed.

"You investigated that?"

Jasper nodded.

"I investigate everyone."

Dominic smiled slightly.

"Boss..."

"I think she's exactly who she claims to be."

Jasper looked through the glass wall into the playroom.

Meredith sat on the floor helping Phoebe build a castle from colorful wooden blocks.

Phoebe laughed so loudly the sound echoed through the bunker.

Jasper realized something painful.

His daughter hadn't laughed like that in months.

Perhaps...

Not since Evelyn died.

He whispered almost to himself,

"I nearly arrested the woman who saved my child."

Dominic followed his gaze.

"And now?"

Jasper didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he watched Meredith catch one of the blocks before it fell, making Phoebe burst into another fit of giggles.

Finally, he spoke.

"Now..."

"...I intend to find out who is truly standing beside me."

Neither man noticed that one of the security monitors had briefly flickered.

Only for a second.

Just long enough for an unseen hacker to access the bunker's external camera feed.

Hundreds of miles away, a progress bar slowly reached one hundred percent.

A message appeared on another screen.

LOCATION CONFIRMED.

A pair of crimson lips curved into a satisfied smile.

Genevieve whispered into the darkness,

May you like

"I've found you."
