Chapter 8 - Justice at the Duca Estate

The heavy silence in the study was broken only by the hum of the computers executing the automatic federal data transfer that Lorenzo had triggered from the cabin earlier that morning.

Before Damian could reach for the pistol hidden inside his jacket, two of the senior capos—men who had served Lorenzo’s father and valued loyalty above all else—moved with lightning speed. Sal Moretti, the eldest of the syndicate heads, slammed Damian face-first onto the mahogany desk, wrenching his arms behind his back and snapping a pair of heavy silver zip-ties around his wrists.

"Traitor," Sal spat, shoving Damian down hard against the wood.

Vivian tried to slip quietly toward the side exit, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.

"Signora Castellano," Lorenzo’s voice stopped her dead in her tracks. He didn't raise his voice, but she froze as if she had been hit by a physical blow. "Don't rush away. The federal agents are arriving at the gates right now. I’m sure they’ll want to discuss your taste in French perfume and industrial explosives."

Sirens began wailing in the distance, growing louder by the second as a convoy of black-and-white police cruisers and unmarked federal vehicles swarmed up the Duca estate driveway.

Within minutes, federal agents in tactical gear flooded the mansion. Damian and Vivian were hauled out in handcuffs, their expensive suits stained with the mud of their shattered conspiracy.

As the front doors slammed shut behind the departing convoy, the heavy, suffocating tension that had gripped the Duca empire for days finally evaporated.

Lorenzo stood alone in his study for a long moment, staring out the window toward the gray Atlantic. The storm had passed. The air outside was crisp, clean, and smelling faintly of pine and salt.

Sophia walked into the study a few minutes later, holding Emma’s small hand. The little girl was clutching her gray stuffed rabbit and looking around the grand room with wide eyes.

"Is the bad man gone forever, Uncle Duca?" Emma asked, walking right up to him.

Lorenzo knelt down, looking into the child's bright hazel eyes. The coldness that had defined his entire adult life—the armor he had worn since the night his parents were taken from him—finally melted away, replaced by something warm, steady, and real.

"Yes, little one," Lorenzo smiled softly, gently tapping Emma’s button nose. "He's gone. And he's never coming back."
