Chapter 7 - The Return of the Ghost

Two days later, the sun hung low over Greyhaven, casting long, golden shadows across the stone facade of the Duca mansion.
Inside the grand study, Damian Rossi stood triumphantly before the massive wall safe. The room was packed with the five family capos, their faces tense and watchful. Vivian Castellano stood beside Damian, her hand resting gracefully on his arm like a triumphant queen.
"As you can see, gentlemen," Damian announced, his voice echoing off the mahogany bookshelves, "Lorenzo’s stubbornness has left us in a precarious position. But with the board's approval, I have initiated the emergency asset transfer. The safe is primed. Once I enter the final authorization code, the transition is complete."
Damian punched a six-digit code into the digital keypad and pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A harsh red light flashed on the panel.
"Error," a synthetic voice echoed from the machine. "Biometric mismatch. System lockdown initiated."
Damian frowned, tapping the keys again. "That's impossible. The override code is valid."
Suddenly, every television screen mounted on the walls of the study flickered to life. The CNN news logo vanished, replaced by the live security feed of the Duca estate’s front gates.
A battered, mud-splattered black sedan rolled slowly up the gravel driveway, stopping directly beneath the grand stone archway.
The driver's side door opened.
A pair of polished leather shoes stepped out onto the gravel.
Then came the sharp, unmistakable sound of a heavy wool coat brushing against the wind.
Lorenzo Duca walked up the stone steps, his posture straight, his expression an absolute mask of terrifying, icy wrath. He didn't look like a ghost who had crawled out of the sea; he looked like an avenging angel of death.
The guards at the front door stared in horror, dropping their hands to their sides as if they were looking at a specter.
Creeeak.
The grand double doors of the mansion slowly swung open.
Inside the study, the color drained entirely from Damian’s face. He staggered backward, his hand slipping off the safe keypad. Vivian let out a sharp, choked gasp, her fingers clutching at her diamond necklace as if she were already choking.
"L-Lorenzo?" Damian stammered, his voice cracking like dry twigs. "How... you were in the harbor..."
Lorenzo stepped into the doorway of the study, filling the room with his overwhelming, suffocating presence. The capos around the room slowly stepped away from Damian, their eyes widening in sudden, profound terror.
"You should have checked the tide tables, Damian," Lorenzo said softly, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. "And you should have remembered one fundamental rule about the Duca family."
May you like
Lorenzo stepped forward, his cold eyes locked onto his former friend.
"We never stay down."
