Chapter 9 - THE RACE AGAINST THE HORIZON

The black SUVs tore down the expressway toward O'Hare International Airport, breaking every speed limit in the state, escorted by the sheer, unbridled desperation of a father who had already lost everything once and refused to lose it again.
When they screeched through the security gate of the private aviation terminal—Dante's syndicate credentials clearing the electronic barriers instantly—a sleek Gulfstream private jet was sitting on the tarmac with its twin engines whining, preparing to taxi toward the active runway.
Dante didn't wait for the vehicle to come to a full stop. He flung the door open, hit the tarmac, and sprinted directly toward the boarding stairs of the jet, his guards fanning out to block the wings.
A startled flight attendant standing in the open cabin door gasped as Dante stormed up the steps, pushing past her into the luxurious cabin.
"Sir, you cannot—this is a private charter—"
"Shut up," Dante barked, his eyes scanning the plush leather seating area.
In the center seat, cradling a small, expensive leather-bound carrier basket, sat a nervous-looking middle-aged courier holding a stack of international adoption documents. Inside the basket, wrapped in a blue silk blanket, was a tiny baby sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the chaos around him.
Dante froze. His breath hitched in his throat.
Slowly, with hands that shook far more than they had during any underworld shootout, Dante reached out and touched the baby's left foot.
The second toe. The distinct splay. The microscopic gap.
It matched.
Dante lifted the baby out of the basket, pulling the tiny infant against his chest. For the first time in nineteen agonizing, nightmare-filled days, the suffocating weight in Dante's chest cracked open. A single tear slipped down his cheek, cutting a clean path through the stubble on his jaw, landing softly on the baby's blanket.

"I've got you," Dante whispered, his voice breaking entirely. "I've got you, Matteo. Daddy's here."
Sofia climbed the steps of the jet a moment later, breathless, stopping at the threshold of the cabin. When she saw Dante holding the infant, a profound, overwhelming wave of relief washed over her, bringing tears to her eyes. The nightmare was over. The betrayal had been exposed, and the rightful heir was finally home.
