Chapter 10 - A NEW DAWN IN CHICAGO

Three weeks later, the private wing of Northwestern Mercy Hospital looked entirely different.

The corrupt board of trustees, along with Dr. Julian Croft and his entire administrative network, had been swept away in a federal RICO indictment orchestrated by federal prosecutors who suddenly found themselves in possession of an overwhelming, unarguable treasure trove of digital and physical evidence dropped anonymously on their doorsteps.

In room 3, the morning sun poured warmly through the window, painting the walls in soft golden hues. The artificial beeping of monitors had been replaced by the quiet, peaceful breathing of a healthy baby growing stronger by the day.

Sofia Reyes stood by the crib, adjusting the edge of the blue blanket. Matteo Marchetti now weighed five pounds, eight ounces, his cheeks rounder, his breathing strong and steady.

The door to the private suite opened, and Dante walked in. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket today; he wore a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. In his arms, he carried a fresh bouquet of flowers, which he placed gently on the side table before stepping up beside Sofia.

"He gained another two ounces overnight," Sofia said, smiling warmly as she looked up at him. "At this rate, he'll be running the city council by next year."

Dante chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering ghosts of the past. He looked down at his son, then turned his dark, intense gaze toward Sofia.

"The hospital board offered me a permanent endowment fund to keep my name attached to the pediatric wing," Dante said quietly. "I told them I'd consider it on one condition."

Sofia raised an eyebrow. "And what condition is that?"

"That the entire NICU department is placed under the direct supervision of a new Chief Administrator—someone with sharp eyes, an unshakeable moral compass, and a complete refusal to look the other way when something is wrong," Dante said, a faint smile touching his lips. "An official offer letter is waiting on your desk downstairs, Sofia. Complete autonomy, tripled budget, and a security detail to ensure nobody ever threatens you in this building again."

Sofia looked at him, feeling the warmth of a new beginning settling deep into her chest. She reached down, gently brushing her thumb against Matteo's tiny foot, feeling the familiar, perfect little gap between his toes.

"Well," Sofia said, her eyes meeting Dante's with a bright, confident sparkle. "It sounds like I have a new job to start."

Dante reached out, his hand resting gently over hers on the edge of the crib, sealing a bond forged in fire, truth, and an unbreakable promise. Outside, the Chicago skyline rose tall and clear into the morning light, and for the first time in nineteen endless days, the city finally felt safe.
