Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

By the end of the second month, the falcon was ready to fly.
Gabriel’s physical strength had returned to nearly eighty percent. The limp in his left leg was barely noticeable, a subtle, dangerous grace returning to his stride. His voice had regained its low, commanding rumble.
Leo had been acting as their eyes and ears in Chicago, traveling back and forth under the guise of visiting his sick sister. The news he brought back was grim.
"Carmine is losing control," Leo reported, standing by the kitchen table where Gabriel and Matilda were studying a map of the city. "He's greedy, boss. He raised the protection fees on the local businesses by fifty percent. The unions are striking because he skimmed their pension funds. The other families... they're getting restless. They see him as a loose cannon."
"And my loyalists?" Gabriel asked, his finger tracing the outline of the Loop.
"They're lying low," Leo said. "Many of them were demoted or forced out. But they're angry. They want the old way back. Your way."
Gabriel nodded, his eyes cold and calculating. "Carmine is hosting a gala next Thursday at the Chicago Athletic Association. It's a celebration of his 'official' ascension to the throne. All the major bosses from the other families will be there. The city's elite."
"It's a trap if you walk in there alone," Dr. Vale warned from the doorway.
"I won't be alone," Gabriel said, looking at Matilda.
She felt a thrill of nervous energy shoot through her spine. "What do you need me to do, Mr. Falcone?"
"I need you to be who you've always been, Matilda," Gabriel said, a dark, brilliant smile crossing his lips. "Invisible. Until it's too late for them to see you."
For the next five days, they prepared. Gabriel used his hidden financial reserves to purchase weapons, secure safe communication lines, and contact his remaining loyalists.
But he also did something else.
He sent Leo to a high-end boutique in Milwaukee with specific measurements.
When Leo returned, he carried a large, black garment bag. Gabriel presented it to Matilda.
"Open it," he said.
Inside was a stunning gown of deep, midnight-blue silk. It was beautifully tailored to fit her large curves, designed to accentuate the strength of her shoulders and the warmth of her skin.
"I... I can't wear this, Mr. Falcone," Matilda whispered, her face turning red. "I'm just a maid."

Gabriel walked over to her, his smoke-gray eyes locking onto hers with a fierce intensity. He took her hands in his.
"You are the woman who kept my heart beating," he said softly. "You are the shield of the Falcone family. On Thursday night, Chicago will see you for exactly who you are."
