Chapter 10 - The Sovereign and the Shield

Six months after the night of the flatline, the Highland Park mansion hosted a different kind of gathering.

There were no armed guards whispering in the corners, no tense atmosphere of fear and calculation. The grand ballroom was filled with music, laughter, and the warm aroma of a feast cooked by the staff, who were now paid a fair wage and treated with the utmost respect.

It was a celebration of the new Chicago.

Gabriel stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, dressed in a sleek black tuxedo. He looked down at the crowd, his heart full of a peace he had never known in his thirty-four years of life.

He raised his hand, and the room went silent.

"Tonight, we celebrate a new beginning," Gabriel said, his voice carrying to every corner of the room. "An era of honor, of strength, and of protection for those who keep our world standing. But most of all, we celebrate the person who made all of this possible."

He turned and reached his hand out toward the hallway.

Matilda stepped into the light.

She wore a custom-made gown of emerald-green velvet that flowed beautifully over her curves, her brown hair styled in soft waves around her face. Her eyes were bright, no longer looking down at the floor, but looking out at the world with the proud, confident gaze of a queen.

Gabriel took her hand, leading her down the stairs.

The crowd erupted into a roaring, genuine applause. The captains, the cooks, the drivers, and the maids all clapped together, a united family acknowledging the true heart of their empire.

Gabriel led Matilda to the center of the dance floor. The orchestra began to play a soft, romantic waltz.

"I don't know how to dance, Gabriel," Matilda whispered, her face flushing with a beautiful, warm pink.

"Just follow me," Gabriel said, his strong arm wrapping securely around her waist, his hand holding hers tight. "I've got you. I'll always have you."

As they moved together across the polished floor, Matilda rested her head against his chest. Beneath the fabric of his tuxedo, she could hear the steady, strong, and rhythmic beat of his heart.

Thump... thump... thump...

It was the heartbeat she had fought for. The heartbeat she had kept alive through the darkest night of her life.

And now, as the dawn of their new life together shone brightly through the stained-glass windows of the ballroom, she knew that this heart would beat for her, and only for her, until the end of time.
