Chapter 6 - The Architecture of Betrayal

The service stairs led them deep into the bowels of the estate, far below the luxurious living quarters, where the walls turned from polished wood to raw, damp concrete. This was the old foundation of the house, a network of utility tunnels and storage cellars that dated back to the Prohibition era.

"My father’s vault is through the central junction ahead," Matteo said, his voice echoing softly in the narrow space. "If Carlo told them the location, they’ll have the entrance surrounded."

"They won't just surround it; they'll be setting up a breach," Mia said, checking the ammunition in the captured rifle. "Your father has four guards with him. Even with the element of surprise, a reinforced vault door takes time to cut through. We have the advantage of the shadows."

They moved forward, the air growing colder. Mia kept her flashlight off, relying entirely on her memory of the blueprints she had memorized. Every turn, every pipe, every valve was cataloged in her mind.

"Why did you do it?" Matteo asked suddenly, his voice breaking the silence. "When my father told you to leave, when he insulted you... why didn't you just take the agency's severance pay and walk away?"

Mia didn't stop moving. "Because people like your father think the world operates on a very simple set of rules. The strong look a certain way, the dangerous look a certain way, and women are supposed to be kept in the background where it’s safe. I don't like simple rules. And I really don't like being told what I can and cannot do by a man who can't even see the traitor standing next to him."

Matteo let out a short, quiet laugh. "He’s going to have to eat every single word he said to you."

"I don't care about him eating his words," Mia said, slowing her pace as they approached a heavy iron grating. "I just want to collect my full fee from Mr. Hensley. I have a deposit on a very nice apartment with absolutely no loose rugs."

She stopped, pressing her back against the wet concrete wall. Through the gaps in the iron grating, she could see the central junction room.

The scene was chaotic. The heavy, circular steel door of Lorenzo DeLuca’s private vault was visible at the far end of the chamber. Two men in tactical gear were busy setting up a portable thermal lance against the locking mechanism, the bright, white-hot sparks illuminating the room in violent bursts.

Carlo stood a few feet back, his cell phone pressed to his ear, his face illuminated by the screen.

"We’re at the vault now," Carlo was saying into the phone, his voice echoing in the chamber. "The old man locked himself in, but the lance will have the hinges melted through in five minutes. Where is the boy? My men said they lost him in the East Wing."

He paused, listening to the reply. His expression darkened. "What do you mean, two of your men are down? By who? The girl? Don't be ridiculous, she trips over her own shadow!"

Mia leaned closer to Matteo. "There are four operatives in the room. Two on the lance, two covering the entrances. And Carlo."

"Can we take them?" Matteo asked, his fingers tightening on his weapon.

"We don't need to take them all out," Mia said, a small, dangerous smile touching her lips. "We just need to change the environment."

She pointed toward the ceiling of the junction room, where a thick, rusted iron pipe ran directly above the men with the thermal lance.

"That's the primary main line for the estate's fire suppression system," Mia whispered. "It runs on a separate pressure tank in the sub-cellar. If I hit that valve joint, the sudden pressure drop will flood the room with high-pressure, stagnant water. The thermal lance will short out, and the steam will blind everyone in the room."

"And how are you going to hit a three-inch valve joint in the dark from forty yards away?" Matteo asked.

Mia raised the rifle, her shoulder locking into place against the buttstock. Her expression became utterly serene. "I told you, Mr. DeLuca. My hands do not fail."
