Chapter 10 - The Shield and the Hearth

The Metropolitan Museum gala was a sea of silk, diamonds, and high society. The grand hall was filled with the soft strains of an orchestra, the chatter of the city’s elite, and the clinking of crystal glasses.

Lorenzo DeLuca stood near the grand staircase, conversing with a prominent city councilman. The older boss looked relaxed, his position more secure than it had ever been in his long life. Every few minutes, his eyes would wander toward the center of the ballroom, a look of profound satisfaction passing over his features.

Matteo and Mia moved through the crowd. Mia wore a stunning, emerald-green evening gown that flowed elegantly around her frame, concealing the compact weapon secured to her thigh. Her hair was swept up, exposing the tiny, flesh-colored earpiece that connected her to the security grid.

As they stepped onto the polished dance floor, the orchestra transitioned into a slow, sweeping waltz.

Matteo turned to her, offering his hand. "May I have this dance, Miss Callaway?"

Mia looked at the smooth, waxed marble floor, then up at his tall frame. "You're taking a significant risk, Mr. DeLuca. We are currently surrounded by three hundred witnesses, and my ability to navigate a moving crowd while performing rhythmic steps is entirely unproven."

"I have complete faith in your hands," Matteo said, his smile bright and untroubled. "And if you fall, I'll just catch you. Like I've been doing for the last six months."

Mia smiled—a real, radiant smile that completely transformed her face. She placed her hand in his, and they stepped into the dance.

For the first few bars, Mia was stiff, her analytical mind trying to calculate the distance between their steps and the surrounding couples. But as Matteo’s arm tightened securely around her waist, guiding her with a gentle, confident strength, she let the calculations go. She stopped looking at the sightlines. She stopped scanning the crowd for blind spots. For the first time in her life, she simply felt safe.

They moved together through the light and the music, a perfect partnership born of chaos, cemented by loyalty, and bound by a deep, undeniable love.

As the dance ended, Matteo leaned down, his breath warm against her ear. "You didn't trip even once," he whispered.

May you like

Mia looked up into his eyes, her hand resting against his chest, right over the steady, calm beating of his heart.

"I told you, Matteo," she said softly, her voice filled with a quiet, unshakeable certainty. "When I'm with you, I always know exactly where I stand."
