Chapter 8 - The Showdown at Pier 44

The midnight wind howling off the Providence harbor was biting and merciless, carrying the sharp scent of salt, decaying kelp, and industrial oil. Pier 44 was an abandoned, cavernous shipping terminal, its corrugated metal walls rattling violently against the ocean gale.

Lucas stepped out of his black armored SUV alone, his heavy boots crunching against the gravel. He wore a tactical vest over a dark turtleneck, a customized combat rifle slung across his chest, and his expression set in stone.

From the shadows of the loading bay, a slow, mocking clap echoed through the empty terminal.

"Well, well, well," Viktor Vance purred, stepping out into the harsh yellow glow of a single overhead spotlight. Behind him stood a dozen international mercenaries clad in black combat gear, automatic weapons raised. In the center, tied securely to a wooden chair with a heavy chain around his chest, was Victor Petrova. Victor’s head lolled forward, unconscious or barely hanging on.

"Lucas," Vance smiled, spreading his arms wide. "I must hand it to you. Walking into a lion's den alone. True romantic dedication. Did you bring the ledger codes?"

Lucas stopped twenty feet away, his hands resting casually at his sides, though every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring. "Vance. You always did have a flair for theatrical stupidity. Dragging international politics into my city?"

"Your city?" Vance laughed sharply. "Providence was nothing before I carved out its routes for you. And now, you think you can play family man with a penniless maid?" Vance’s eyes flashed with malice. "Kill him," he nodded toward Victor.

One of the mercenaries raised a pistol toward Victor's head.

"Stop," Lucas commanded, his voice ringing out like steel. He reached into his tactical pocket, pulling out a small titanium data drive. "The codes are right here. Everything you want. Take it and walk away."

Vance smiled greedily, motioning for one of his men to retrieve the drive. "Smart boy, Lucas. Very smart. You always knew when to—"

Click.

It wasn't the sound of a gun priming. It was the synchronized click of forty heavy tactical rifles powering up from the rafters above.

Vance’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes darted upward as the shadows of the high catwalks illuminated, revealing dozens of elite Falcone enforcers—led by Gino—aiming high-powered sniper rifles directly at Vance’s mercenary squad. At the same exact moment, the heavy metal doors at the rear of the warehouse blasted open, and three armored vehicles rolled inward, their high-beam headlights blinding Vance’s men.

"Did you really think," Lucas said, taking a slow step forward, his voice dripping with cold disdain, "that I would come to your trap without cleaning house first?"

Panicking, Vance lunged forward, drawing a hidden pistol and pressing the barrel directly against Victor Petrova’s temple. "Drop your weapons! All of you! Or I blow his brains across this concrete right now!"

Lucas didn't flinch. He didn't raise his rifle. Instead, he simply looked at Vance with an expression of pure pity.

"You really don't know who you're dealing with, do you, Viktor?" Lucas asked softly.

Before Vance could pull the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed through the cavernous warehouse.

A high-precision round fired from the catwalk pierced the concrete floor precisely two inches from Vance’s boot, sending sparks flying. At the same second, a second sniper round neatly severed the ropes binding Victor Petrova to his chair, dropping him safely into the arms of two rushing Falcone medics.

Vance spun around in a blind rage, screaming for his men to open fire—but it was already over. In less than thirty seconds, the Falcone enforcers disarmed and pinned every single mercenary to the ground without firing a lethal shot.

Lucas walked slowly toward Vance, stopping just inches away. Vance raised his pistol with a shaking hand, his face contorted in sheer terror.

"It's over, Viktor," Lucas whispered.

Lucas moved with blinding, predatory speed. He swept Vance’s arm upward, disarmed the pistol with a sharp twist that sent the weapon clattering across the concrete, and delivered a devastating right hook that knocked Vance off his feet, sending him crashing hard into the dirt.

As Gino and the guards swarmed forward to secure Vance in heavy titanium zip-ties, Lucas straightened his collar, looking down at his defeated enemy without a shred of emotion.

"Take him to the deepest holding facility we have," Lucas instructed coldly. "He’s going to spend the rest of his natural life answering questions about every syndicate in Europe."

Victor Petrova, coughing and supported by two medics, looked up at Lucas with wide, disbelieving eyes. "You... you’re the boss. You’re the man Nadia..."

"Let's go home, Victor," Lucas interrupted, a faint, genuine warmth touching his eyes for the first time in years. "Your sister is waiting."
