Chapter 3 - The Secret Marriage of the Past

The chaos that erupted in the grand ballroom after Lucas’s declaration was immediate and deafening. Donald Rossi was screaming threats of a complete syndicate fallout, his face purple with rage, while security guards moved in with practiced efficiency to escort a hysterical, sobbing Bianca toward the towering double doors. Bianca kicked, scratched, and cursed Nadia’s name until her voice echoed out into the night air, her diamond-encrusted shoes clicking furiously against the marble as she was dragged away from the life she thought she had already won.

Nadia, however, heard none of it. Her mind was spinning off its axis.

Seven months looking for you?

She stumbled backward, her hand pressing harder against her aching stomach as Gino stepped forward respectfully to steady her elbow. "Easy, child," the old steward murmured gently, his eyes full of a sorrowful understanding she hadn't noticed before. "Let the boss explain."

Lucas didn't care about the departing guests, the whispering capos, or the crumbling alliance with the Rossis. He scooped Nadia up into his arms with effortless strength, ignoring her startled gasp, and carried her out of the ballroom, away from the glittering crowd, straight up the grand staircase and into his private study.

The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind them, sealing out the noise of the world.

Lucas set her down gently on a plush leather sofa near the fireplace, immediately kneeling before her again. He reached for her hands, but Nadia pulled them back, her eyes flashing with a mix of fear and righteous anger.

"Don't touch me," she breathed, her voice trembling. "What is the meaning of this? What kind of sick game are you playing? I am Nadia Petrova. I am a maid in this house. I came here to work off a debt, and—and to find out what happened to my brother. I have never been your wife!"

Lucas closed his eyes, a look of profound pain crossing his sharp features. He ran a hand through his dark hair, letting out a long, ragged sigh.

"You don't remember, do you?" he asked quietly, looking up at her with eyes that held years of unspoken grief.

"Remember what?" Nadia demanded, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Are you out of your mind? My husband, Tomas, died seven months ago! He worked at the harbor! He was killed in an 'accident' just weeks after we found out I was pregnant!"

Lucas flinched as if he had been struck physically. He stood up slowly, walked over to his massive oak desk, unlocked a heavy titanium drawer, and pulled out a worn, leather-bound folder. He carried it back, kneeling before her once more, and laid it open on her lap.

Nadia looked down. Her breath caught in her throat.

There, staring up at her from a faded marriage certificate, were her own signature and the signature of a man she had loved in another life—a man she had known not as Lucas Falcone, the ruthless mafia boss of Providence, but as Luke, a quiet, bruised stranger who had washed up on the shores of a small coastal town five years ago, memory-blank, running from a past he couldn't recall.

"No," Nadia whispered, shaking her head violently as the memories—long buried, locked away by trauma and shock—flooded back with terrifying clarity. "No... that's impossible. Luke... Luke was a fisherman. He had scars on his back from a shipwreck. He didn't have money, he didn't have an empire, he didn't—"

"Luke was an alias," Lucas interrupted softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Five years ago, a rival faction tried to assassinate me. My car was driven off a cliff into the freezing sea. I survived, but the impact wiped my memory clean. I washed ashore in that small fishing village, half-dead. You found me, Nadia. You took me in. You nursed me back to health for six months."

Tears spilled over Nadia’s eyelashes, hot and fast, as the pieces clicked together with agonizing precision. She remembered the man she had called Luke. She remembered falling in love with his steady, gentle hands, his quiet voice, the way he had looked at her as if she were the only light in his dark world. They had married in a tiny seaside chapel with wildflowers in her hair.

"And then..." Nadia choked out, her hands trembling as they touched the signature on the paper. "One morning... you were gone. Just gone. The cabin was empty. I thought... I thought you abandoned me. I thought you realized you were tied to a nobody and left."

"I never left by choice," Lucas said, his voice breaking for the first time. He reached out, gently catching one of her falling tears with his thumb. "Men from my father's old syndicate tracked me down. The shock of their violence against me triggered my memories to return all at once. I remembered who I was. I remembered my name, my empire, my enemies. But before I could return to the village to get you, my enemies struck again, targeting anyone connected to the Falcone name. I had to fake my own death—or rather, allow the world to believe Luke was dead—to keep you safe from the warzone I had to step back into."

Nadia stared at him, the weight of five years of sorrow, confusion, and betrayal crashing down upon her shoulders. "You... you left me to protect me?"

"I left you because I was a monster who thought the only way to keep his angel safe was to stay in the dark," Lucas whispered, his forehead resting gently against her knee. "I spent four years tearing my empire apart, wiping out every rival, securing every border, so that one day I could bring you home. But when I finally sent my men to find you in the village... you had vanished. You had married another man—Tomas Petrova."

Nadia’s breath hitched. "Tomas... Tomas was my childhood friend. When I realized I was pregnant with your child—yes, your child, Lucas—Tomas found me starving and desperate. He knew the child wasn't his, but he loved me enough to give the baby a name, to marry me on paper so I wouldn't be an unwed mother in a cruel town. He gave me shelter. He was a good man."

"And he died," Lucas said darkly, his jaw tightening. "He didn't die in an accident, Nadia. My intelligence reports cross-referenced your husband's death three weeks ago. He was murdered by Donald Rossi’s men because Tomas accidentally witnessed a drug shipment coming through the harbor—a shipment tied to the very alliance I was forced to make to keep my syndicate stable."

The room spun. Nadia gripped the edges of the leather sofa, her vision blurring. Her husband—the man who had protected her and given her a home—was murdered by the very family whose daughter had just stood in this ballroom and humiliated her.

"And you..." Nadia whispered, looking down at Lucas with a storm of emotions raging in her chest. "You didn't know I was here."

"If I had known you were in this house," Lucas said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly register, "I would have burned Providence to the ground before letting anyone lay a finger on you. Bianca cut your hair? Bianca humiliated you?" He looked up, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fire. "She walked out of this house with her life today only because I wanted to deal with her father first. But by sunrise, the Rossi family will cease to exist."
