Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Resilience

Back at the ridge safehouse, the atmosphere was lighter but heavily guarded. Elena was finally able to sit up in bed, color returning to her cheeks. Sophie sat next to her, carefully drawing a picture of a large, black car with a small stick figure labeled "Vincent" driving it.

Vincent walked into the room, carrying a tray with fresh tea and a plate of Maria's famous almond biscotti.

Elena smiled, a genuine, warm expression that completely transformed her face. "You look tired, Vincent."

"Occupational hazard," he replied, setting the tray down. He pulled up a chair. "We have the ledger. It's safe. My tech guys are making digital copies and sending them to secure servers across the country. The Marcones can't destroy it now, even if they kill everyone in this room."

Elena reached out and placed her hand over his. This time, her skin was warm, vibrant. "Thank you. For everything. You didn't have to do this. We were strangers."

"You were a woman in danger because you tried to do the right thing," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a soft murmur. "And your daughter has a habit of making demands I can't refuse."

Sophie looked up from her drawing, grinning. "Vincent is strong, Mama. He told me nobody would hurt us anymore."

Elena’s eyes softened as she looked at her daughter, then back at Vincent. "Maria told me you were lonely. She said you spent all your time carrying the weight of this city on your shoulders, and that you forgot how to live for yourself."

Vincent looked away, feeling suddenly exposed. In his world, vulnerability was a death sentence. But looking into Elena's clear, honest eyes, he found he didn't want to hide anymore. "My father taught me that family is the only thing that matters. But he forgot to tell me how to start one of my own."

Before Elena could reply, the heavy alarm klaxon of the safehouse began to blare, its red lights flashing violently through the windows.

Tony burst into the room, his face pale. "Boss, we’ve got a problem. A convoy of vehicles just breached the outer gate. It’s Don Marcone. He brought everything he’s got."
