Chapter 6 - THE POISONED SAMPLE

Sarah backed up another step until the small of her back hit the tiled wall of the private bathroom. Her breathing turned shallow and rapid, her chest heaving beneath her blue tunic.

“Nothing,” Sarah whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “It’s... it’s just a routine waste vial.”

Matteo crossed the room in three long strides, his hand shooting out to grab Sarah’s wrist with a grip like a hydraulic vise. With a sharp twist, he forced her fingers open and snatched the small plastic container from her grasp.

He held it up to the morning light pouring through the window.

Inside the clear vial was a small amount of milky residue—formula mixed with a faint, crystalline powder that didn't dissolve entirely into the liquid.

Daniel stepped forward, taking the vial from Matteo’s hand. He swirled the contents once, his eyes turning to absolute ice.

“This isn't standard formula,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that seemed to lower the temperature in the room by ten degrees. “What was going into my son’s feeding tube while I was downstairs?”

Harrison, who had hurried into the room behind Matteo, peered over Daniel’s shoulder and gasped, slapping a hand over his mouth. “Good God... that’s potassium chloride mixed with a heavy sedative. If administered in that concentration to a premature infant... it would induce a fatal cardiac arrest within minutes.”

The room spun around Rachel.

An attempted murder. Right here in the hospital. Not from an outside hit squad, but from the inside—administered slowly, day after day, disguised as sudden infant deterioration or hyperesthesia complications.

“Who paid you?” Daniel asked.

He didn't yell. He didn't slam his fist against the wall. He simply stared at Sarah with a gaze so terrifying that the nurse burst into sudden, hysterical sobs, sliding down the tiled wall until she sat in a heap on the floor.

“I didn't mean to!” Sarah cried, clutching her face in her hands. “I swear I didn't want to kill him! They said it was just supposed to keep him fussy! They said if he kept crying, the transfer orders would go through and he’d be moved to an off-site clinic where security was weaker!”

“Who is ‘they’?” Matteo demanded, his hand gripping the butt of his hidden pistol.

“The board!” Sarah sobbed hysterically. “Dr. Harrison’s administrative assistant, Marcus! And... and Vice President Vance! They want control of the hospital’s endowment fund! As long as Daniel Russo’s son is alive and guarded by an army here, the board can't push through the restructuring deal with the pharmaceutical syndicate! They said if the baby died of natural complications, nobody would look twice!”

Harrison staggered backward, clutching his chest as if he had been struck with a hammer. “Vance? Marcus? That’s impossible... they’re hospital administrators!”

“They’re corporate vultures,” Daniel corrected him, his voice trembling with a rage so deep it defied description. He looked down at the incubator where little Leo was still sleeping peacefully, completely unaware that he had just dodged a bullet fired by men in expensive business suits.

Daniel turned his gaze back to Sarah.

“Matteo,” Daniel said quietly.

“Boss?”

“Call the district attorney’s special anti-corruption unit. Not the local precinct—they’re all on the payroll. Call the federal task force downtown. Tell them I have a signed confession, a poisoned sample, and three corporate executives waiting to be arrested before noon.”

“And her?” Matteo pointed down at Sarah.

“Put her in the holding cell at the harbor warehouse,” Daniel said without a trace of emotion. “Let her think about how much an extra ten thousand dollars is worth when you spend the rest of your life eating concrete.”
