Chapter 10 - A NEW BEGINNING

Five years later, the pediatric wing of the Russo-Jenkins Children’s Foundation in downtown was humming with life.

It was a bright Saturday morning, and the grand lobby was filled with the soft sounds of acoustic music, laughing children, and the chatter of grateful parents.

In the center of the main garden courtyard, a five-year-old boy with dark, unruly hair and sharp slate eyes was running across the green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy while shouting at the top of his lungs.

“Leo! Don’t step on the petunias!” a voice called out.

Leo laughed, altering his course just in time to avoid the flower bed, before leaping straight into the open arms of a man kneeling on the grass.

Daniel caught his son easily, swinging him up into the air as the boy giggled uncontrollably.

A few feet away, Rachel stood beneath the shade of a blossoming cherry tree, holding a toddler girl with big, curious eyes and soft brown curls—their daughter, Mia. Rachel wore a simple summer dress, her face radiant with happiness as she watched her husband and son wrestle on the lawn.

Daniel walked over, holding Leo by one hand while sliding his other arm around Rachel’s waist, pulling her close against him. Leo leaned against his mother’s side, reaching up to tug playfully at her necklace.

“You know,” Daniel said with a faint, teasing smirk, looking down at his son before turning his gaze to his wife, “for a kid who used to scream at the slightest touch, he’s awfully loud these days.”

“That’s because he’s healthy,” Rachel smiled, resting her head against Daniel’s shoulder as the warm afternoon breeze rustled the leaves above them. “And he knows he has an army protecting him.”

Daniel pressed a soft kiss to the top of Rachel’s head, then looked out over the sunlit courtyard, where families smiled, children played, and the past was finally nothing more than a distant, quiet shadow.
