Chapter 10 - A Home Rebuilt

Two years later.
The afternoon sun spilled across the lawn of the Ridgefield estate. A summer breeze rustled the leaves of the grand oak tree near the garden, where a hand-built wooden swing swayed gently.
Leo, now eight years old and full of vibrant energy, was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the grass, his laughter echoing across the hills. His health was perfect—his recent cardiologist report confirmed that his heart defect had closed completely.
On the wrap-around porch, Maya sat in a rocking chair, holding a three-month-old baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket. The baby had dark, thick hair just like her father, and bright blue eyes just like Maya’s.
Her name was Lily.
Damian stepped out onto the porch carrying two glasses of iced tea. He wore a simple linen shirt, relaxed and completely at peace. He set the glasses down and sat on the edge of the porch railing beside Maya, looking down at his newborn daughter.
"She’s asleep," Maya whispered, leaning her head against Damian’s hip.
Damian reached down, gently stroking the baby’s soft cheek. "She looks just like her mother."
"She has your stubborn nose," Maya teased softly, smiling up at him.
Leo came running up the porch steps, panting happily, the puppy tumbling over his sneakers. "Dad! Maya! Look! The puppy caught the ball!"
"Good job, buddy," Damian laughed, reaching down to ruffle Leo’s hair. "Come sit down before you exhaust yourself."
Leo climbed up onto the bench beside Maya, peering down at his little sister. "Is Lily sleeping?"
"She is," Maya said, putting an arm around Leo's shoulders and pulling him close. "You want to hold her for a second?"
Leo’s eyes lit up. "Can I?"
With practiced care, Maya helped Leo support his tiny sister in his arms. The little baby stirred, opening her bright eyes and staring up at her big brother. Leo smiled down at her with pure, unselfish devotion.
"I’m gonna protect her forever," Leo promised quietly. "Just like you protected me, Mom."
Maya looked up at Damian, her eyes shining with tears of absolute fulfillment. The pain of the past, the blood on the hospital floor, the shadows of grief and fear—all of it had melted away, leaving behind a family forged in courage and bound by unconditional love.

Damian leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to Maya’s forehead, then to Leo’s head, and finally to baby Lily’s tiny hand.
"We are safe now," Damian whispered, looking out over his sunny, peaceful home. "We are all home."
