Chapter 4 - The Threat from the Past

With Charles locked away in the lower cell block, the Moretti family went into high alert. Marcus swept the entire estate, changing every security code, replacing the compromised guards, and dismantling the hidden listening devices Charles had planted throughout the study.
However, the interrogation of Charles revealed an unexpected and dangerous piece of news. Charles hadn't just been selling information to the Falcones—he had also been looking into the backgrounds of all new estate staff to find leverage over Adrian. In doing so, Charles had contacted Mason Bennett, Claire’s abusive ex-husband.
In exchange for a massive payout, Mason had agreed to help the Falcone syndicate locate a secret access point on the Moretti estate grounds—an old drainage tunnel system beneath the east boundary wall that Mason, a former utility contractor, knew how to breach.
Inside the brightly lit kitchen, Adrian stood by the counter as Claire brewed tea. The atmosphere was heavy.
"Claire," Adrian began, his voice unusually gentle. "I need to tell you something about Mason."
Claire dropped the spoon she was holding; it clattered loudly against the tile floor. She turned around, her face instantly draining of color. "Mason? How... how do you know that name?"
Adrian stepped closer, taking her cold hands in his. "Charles found him. Mason sold information about this property to my enemies. They know where you are, Claire."
Tears welling in her eyes, Claire began to shake. "Oh God... no. No, no, no! He promised he would find me! He said he'd take Lily away from me!" She buried her face in her hands, falling apart. "I thought we were safe here... I thought I finally found a home..."
Adrian pulled her into his arms, wrapping his powerful frame around her, shielding her from the terror shaking her body. "Listen to me, Claire," he whispered fiercely against her hair. "You are safe. No one is taking Lily. No one is touching you. I swear on my life, Mason will never lay a finger on either of you again."
Claire sobbed against his chest, clutching his coat tightly. "He's a monster, Adrian. He doesn't care about anything."
"Then he has never met a real monster," Adrian replied, his voice chillingly absolute.
That night, heavy rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows of the estate. Thunder rumbled across the sky, shaking the foundation of the house. Inside the nursery, Lily was terrified by the lightning, hiding under her thick blankets.
Claire tried to soothe her, but the little girl kept calling for "Uncle Adrian."
When Adrian entered the nursery, wearing a simple black shirt with his sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate tattoos lining his forearms, Lily immediately reached her arms out. "The sky is breaking!" she cried out.
Adrian sat on the edge of her small bed, lifting her effortlessly into his lap. "The sky isn't breaking, little bird," he said gently, stroking her soft brown curls. "It's just making noise to scare away the bad shadows."
"Does the watch scare them too?" Lily asked, rubbing her eyes.
Adrian pulled out the silver pocket watch, winding it slowly until the sweet, soft chime echoed through the room, cutting through the low rumble of thunder outside. Lily nestled her head directly against his chest, listening to the dual rhythm of the watch ticking and Adrian’s calm, steady heartbeat.
Claire sat beside them, watching the powerful man soothe her child to sleep. She reached out, her hand resting softly over Adrian’s knee.
"Thank you," she whispered softly.
Adrian turned his head to look at her. In the dim yellow glow of the nightlight, their eyes met. The distance between them vanished. Adrian reached out, his long fingers tenderly tracing the side of Claire’s face, resting at the nape of her neck.
"I didn't know what I was living for until you two walked into my life, Claire," Adrian admitted, his voice raw with honest emotion.
Claire leaned into his touch, tears rising in her eyes—not of fear, but of an overwhelming, blossoming love. "You saved us, Adrian."
May you like
"No," Adrian murmured, leaning in until his lips gently brushed hers in a deep, reverent kiss. "You saved me."
Outside, through the heavy rain and dark woods surrounding the property, three black SUVs glided toward the perimeter wall with their headlights off. The Falcones, led by Mason Bennett, were preparing their strike.
