Chapter 3 - The Traitor Unmasked

The crisp autumn breeze swept across the sprawling lawns of the Moretti estate, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Lily was playing near the grand stone fountain on the terrace, chasing a yellow butterfly with a plastic net, her giggles echoing against the cold stone walls.
Claire was nearby, folding linens, while Adrian sat at a iron garden table, skimming through intelligence reports. However, his eyes drifted away from the pages far more often than usual, drawn to the sight of Lily’s joyful bouncing and the soft, rare smile playing on Claire’s lips.
"Uncle Adrian! Look! It's super fast!" Lily squealed, running toward him. She tripped slightly over the stone lip of the fountain, and Adrian’s reflexes kicked in instantly—he caught her mid-fall, swooping her safely up into his arms.
Lily gasped, then burst into a fit of giggles. "You caught me! You're like a superhero!"
"A superhero, huh?" Adrian chuckled, setting her down gently. "I think you're just clumsy."
"Am not!" She boomed, pressing her little hands against her hips. "You have to give me a reward for being brave!"
"A reward?" Adrian smiled, pulling his silver pocket watch from his coat. "How about this?"
Lily’s eyes lit up. She took the watch, pressing it against her ear to listen to the delicate, steady ticking inside. "It’s singing the brave song," she declared.
While Lily played with the watch, Adrian stepped toward Claire. The air between them had shifted over the past few weeks—the unspoken trust had deepened into something warmer, something terrifyingly real for a man who had sworn off affection decades ago.
"She adores you," Claire said softly, looking up from the linens.
"The feeling is entirely mutual," Adrian replied, his voice dropping an octave. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a trace of flour from Claire’s cheek—she had been baking with the kitchen staff earlier. Claire’s breath hitched, her cheeks flushing warm as she looked up into his deep, dark eyes.
Before either could speak, Charles stepped out onto the terrace. His expression was polite, but his eyes were calculating as he observed the intimacy between his master and the housekeeper.
"Mr. Moretti," Charles bowed slightly. "The financial auditors from Switzerland have sent the revised ledgers. They require your signature in the private basement vault."
"I'll be down in five minutes, Charles," Adrian said.
Charles bowed again and walked away toward the side entrance of the house.
A few minutes later, Adrian descended into the secure basement quarters. The air down here was cool, smelling of concrete and old paper. As he walked down the long, dimly lit corridor toward the heavy steel door of his secondary office, he heard a faint murmur of voices.
He paused, leaning close to the door frame of an unused storage room.
"I told you, the shipment leaves Newark at midnight," a voice whispered. It was low, tense, and undeniably familiar. It was Charles. "The route is through Route 9. Adrian won't have heavy escort—he thinks the leak is outside the house. Move your men in at 1:00 AM. Finish it."
Adrian’s blood ran cold. The man who had served his family for over thirty years—the man who knew every secret, every code, every weakness of the Moretti empire—was selling him out to the rival Falcone crime syndicate.
Suddenly, a tiny gasp echoed from behind Adrian.
Adrian spun around silently. Lily was standing at the end of the dark corridor, holding her plush rabbit in one hand and Adrian’s silver pocket watch in the other. She had followed him down to return the watch.
"Uncle Adrian?" she called out softly, her voice echoing in the concrete hallway.
Inside the room, the whispering stopped instantly. The door swung open, and Charles stepped out, holding an encrypted satellite phone. His eyes widened in shock as he saw Adrian, then darted to the little girl standing at the end of the hall.
"Mr. Moretti..." Charles stammered, his polished composure instantly shattering into cold panic.
Adrian stepped smoothly between Charles and Lily, his body instinctively blocking the girl from view. His posture shifted in an instant—the warm man who played with wooden blocks vanished, replaced by the terrifying, ruthless Don of the Moretti family.
"You've been very busy, Charles," Adrian said, his voice flat, emotionless, and deadlier than a loaded gun.
Charles realized he was caught. A dark, desperate look crossed the older man’s face. "You've grown soft, Adrian! Building nurseries? Playing house with a servant and her bastard child? You’re destroying everything your father built! The Falcones offered me what you lacked—vision!"
Charles suddenly reached into his suit jacket, pulling a compact pistol.
Before Charles could level the barrel, Adrian closed the distance with terrifying speed. He grabbed Charles’s wrist, twisting it sharply until the bone cracked, sending the gun clattering onto the concrete floor. In the same motion, Adrian drove his fist into Charles’s solar plexus, knocking the air out of him, and pinned the traitor against the concrete wall by his throat.
"You brought treachery into my home," Adrian hissed into Charles's ear, his eyes glowing with lethal fury. "You put her in danger."
"Adrian... please..." Charles choked out, his face turning blue.
At that moment, little feet scurried up behind Adrian. Lily grabbed the hem of Adrian’s dark wool coat, her small voice trembling slightly. "Uncle Adrian? Is the bad man hurting your ears?"
Adrian froze. The deadly rage consuming his veins halted. He took a slow breath, keeping his heavy hand pinned against Charles’s chest, but refrained from snapping the traitor's neck.
"Marcus!" Adrian roared down the hallway.
Within seconds, Marcus rushed down the stairs, gun drawn. He took in the scene instantly—Charles pinned against the wall, Adrian standing tall, and Lily holding onto Adrian’s coat.
"Take him to the holding cells in the lower wine cellar," Adrian ordered coldly, stepping back. "Don't let him die yet. I want every name of every Falcone contact he spoke to."
Marcus grabbed Charles roughly by the collar, dragging the groaning traitor away.
Adrian immediately dropped to one knee, turning to Lily. He checked her over quickly, his hands gentle. "Are you okay, little bird?"
May you like
Lily looked at the watch in her hands, then offered it back to him. "He was loud," she whispered, leaning into Adrian’s chest. "I don't like him."
Adrian wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight against his heart. "He's gone now," Adrian murmured softly, kissing her soft curls. "He will never come near you again."
