Chapter 7 - Healing the Wounds

The afternoon sun finally broke through the heavy November clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the Newport estate’s sprawling gardens.

Elena sat on a stone bench overlooking the harbor, the salt breeze gently catching her dark hair. In her lap, Mia was playing with the gold buttons of her coat, letting out soft, happy gurgles that sounded like music in the quiet air.

Footsteps crunched on the gravel path behind her.

Dante walked up, holding two cups of hot coffee. He handed one to Elena before sitting down beside her on the bench. He looked tired, the shadows under his gray eyes bearing the weight of a transition that would take months to fully stabilize, but for the first time in two years, the harsh, defensive edge was gone from his face.

“The federal agents seized the Providence estate an hour ago,” Dante said quietly, blowing on the surface of his coffee. “Your father’s accounts are frozen. The syndicate capos have agreed to a peaceful restructuring under joint oversight.”

“And my father?” Elena asked, not looking at him.

“He’ll spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security medical facility in upstate New York,” Dante said gently. “Given his health, the courts agreed to a closed facility. He won't be a threat to anyone ever again.”

Elena took a slow sip of her coffee, letting the warmth spread through her chest. A profound, unbelievable sense of lightness settled over her. For her entire life, she had lived inside a cage made of silence, secrets, and fear. Now, the cage was gone.

“I was so afraid of you when we first met at that gala,” Elena murmured, a faint, self-deprecating smile touching her lips. “And then when I found out who you were... I thought my life was completely ruined.”

Dante shifted closer, his shoulder brushing against hers. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her cheek.

“You never ruined my life, Elena,” Dante said softly. “You saved it. Even if you tried to hide from me for two years.”

“I was protecting her,” Elena said, looking down at Mia, who had now successfully grabbed Dante’s thumb and was trying to pull it toward her mouth. “I didn't want her growing up in a world of war and bloodshed.”

Dante smiled—a rare, genuine smile that transformed his harsh features into something remarkably warm. He looked down at his daughter, his expression softening completely.

“She won't grow up in that world,” Dante said, his voice firm and absolute. “The war ends today. The ports are open, the blood debt is settled, and Marquetti’s name won't mean fear anymore. It will mean a fresh start.”

Elena turned her head to look at him, meeting his gray eyes. There was no pretense between them now. No lies, no forged papers, no hidden folders. Just two people who had survived a brutal past and found each other in the wreckage.

“Is that a promise, Dante Caruso?” she asked softly.

“I never break my word,” Dante replied, leaning in and pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to her forehead before resting his hand securely over hers and Mia’s small fingers.
