Chapter 6 - The Collapse of the Empire

The silence in the dining hall was so absolute that the distant sound of the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below echoed off the stone walls.
Salvatore Marquetti looked around the table. The five other Marquetti elders were staring at him, their faces pale, shock and realization dawning in their eyes. They had followed him for decades, believing in his vision, his strength, and his honor. But the mention of the 1996 ledger—and the undeniable proof sitting on the flash drive—shattered the foundation of their loyalty.
“He’s lying,” Salvatore hissed, his voice cracking with sudden, venomous desperation. He pointed a shaking finger at Dante. “The boy is trying to steal our territory before my body is even cold in the ground! Are you going to let a bunch of fabricated lies destroy everything we built?”
“The files are already in the hands of the federal prosecutor’s office,” Dante said calmly, straightening his cuffs. “ Along with the paper trail of every offshore account you used to hide the profits from the stolen docks. By sunset, federal marshals will be executing search warrants on every warehouse and safehouse you own in Providence.”
Salvatore stumbled backward, his hip hitting the heavy mahogany back of his chair. His chest heaved. He looked at Dante, then at Elena, and finally down at the small child cradled in his daughter's arms—the child he had genuinely loved in his own twisted, cold-hearted way, believing she was his ultimate weapon.
“You ruined everything,” Salvatore whispered, his voice trembling with defeat.
“No,” Dante said, his gray eyes locking onto the older man with lethal finality. “You ruined everything thirty years ago. We’re just collecting the debt.”
Within seconds, the Marquetti capos at the table lowered their heads, sliding their weapons onto the table and pushing their chairs back. The empire was over. Without the leadership, without the financial cover, and without the moral authority, Salvatore Marquetti stood completely alone.
Dante stepped forward, gesturing to his men. “Take him away. Secure the Providence estate and make sure every document in his safe is impounded.”
Two Caruso guards stepped up, grabbing Salvatore by the arms. The old man didn't fight back. He allowed himself to be led toward the doors, his shoulders bowed, his decades of ruthless power stripped away in a single morning. As he passed Elena, he didn't look at her. He only stared at the floor, muttering to himself in a broken whisper.

When the heavy doors closed behind him, the room emptied of everyone except Dante, Elena, and the sleeping baby.
Dante let out a long, heavy breath, the tension leaving his shoulders as he turned to face Elena.
