Chapter 7 - Healing Old Wounds

The afternoon sun filtered gently through the arched windows of the Caruso family estate in Westchester, casting long, peaceful shadows across the sprawling green lawns. It had been three weeks since the night at the Mandarin Oriental. The scandal had dominated the front pages of the financial tabloids for exactly forty-eight hours before being swiftly buried under an avalanche of corporate restructuring announcements issued by Caruso Holdings’ legal team. Nico Caruso had been quietly, permanently erased from the corporate registry, his assets frozen and redirected into a charitable trust bearing Elena’s name.

Inside the grand library, the air smelled of aged leather, polished mahogany, and old paper. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, taking the chill out of the crisp autumn air.

Elena sat at the polished walnut desk near the window, her fingers resting lightly on the keys of a vintage upright piano that Matteo had had delivered and tuned specifically for this room. Beside her, Sophie was busy coloring in a massive drawing book, her tongue slightly caught between her teeth in deep concentration, her scuffed sneakers dangling several inches off the cushion of a large velvet armchair.

Matteo stood by the doorway, holding a thick manila folder, watching them in silence. For thirty-eight years, this house had felt like a fortress — a cold, imposing monument to his family’s relentless pursuit of power and dominance. But over the past few weeks, the cavernous halls had begun to feel different. They echoed with the sound of a child’s laughter, the soft clatter of teacups, and, most mornings, the gentle, cascading notes of Chopin floating up the grand staircase.

"Penny for your thoughts," Elena said, looking up from the piano bench and catching his gaze. She offered a soft, teasing smile, the exhaustion that had once defined her features entirely replaced by a radiant, healthy glow.

Matteo walked into the room, tossing the manila folder onto the mahogany desk. "I was just thinking that this house finally looks like someone actually lives in it."

"Well, your interior decorator has terrible taste in carpets, so I had to make a few adjustments," Elena retorted playfully, spinning around on the piano bench.

"My interior decorator is a multi-billionaire real estate tycoon who thinks black marble goes with everything," Matteo replied, a corner of his mouth lifting into a smirk. He walked over, leaning against the edge of the desk, looking down at her. "Speaking of real estate... Marco finished processing the transfer of the East Side property holdings this morning."

Elena’s smile softened, a trace of vulnerability flickering across her gray eyes. "My uncle's old house? The one Nico stole?"

"It wasn't just your uncle's house," Matteo said gently, reaching out to tuck a lock of chestnut hair behind her ear. "It was your home. The legal title has been restored in your name, free and clear of all encumbrances. We can demolish it and build something new, or restore it exactly as it was. Whatever you want."

Elena looked down at her hands for a moment, processing the immense weight of the gesture. For six years, she had carried the bitter memory of being robbed of her heritage, cast out into the cold with nothing but a shoebox of photographs and a broken promise. To have it handed back not as a charity, but as a restoration of justice, felt surreal.

She looked up, her eyes shining with unshed tears of gratitude. She reached out, taking his hand and squeezing it tightly. "Thank you, Matteo. Not just for the house... but for giving us our lives back."

"You don't ever have to thank me for that," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a fierce, absolute sincerity. "You and Sophie... you are my life now. Everything else is just background noise."

"Daddy! Look! I drew a dragon!" Sophie suddenly announced, sliding off the oversized velvet armchair and running over, holding up a Crayola masterpiece featuring a green, multi-headed creature breathing fire over a stick-figure family. "And it's guarding our castle so nobody can ever take it away!"

Matteo knelt down on the Persian rug, scooping Sophie up into his arms and lifting her high into the air, eliciting a bright, ringing laugh that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the library.

"A dragon, huh?" Matteo grinned, setting her gently back down on her feet. "Well, your dragon better be careful, because your mommy and I are going to teach you how to play the piano properly starting tomorrow."

"Only if I get chocolate pancakes afterward," Sophie negotiated seriously, crossing her small arms over her chest.

Elena laughed, walking over and resting her chin on Matteo’s shoulder as he stood up, wrapping his arm around her waist. "Negotiation skills just like her father," Elena whispered against his ear.

May you like

"Worse," Matteo murmured, kissing the top of her head. "She inherited your stubbornness."

And for the first time in his life, Matteo Caruso realized that stubbornness was the best thing that had ever happened to him.
