Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The digital clock on the microwave blinked a silent, erratic red: 12:04 AM. In the cramped kitchen of the 44th Street apartment, the hum of the ancient refrigerator sounded like a jet engine. Elena sat at the small formica table, staring blankly at the open shoebox. The photographs inside seemed like relics from a different lifetime — a lifetime where she wore sundresses instead of patched cardigans, where she laughed without checking her wallet at the grocery store checkout counter, and where she believed the world was a place that made sense.

From the living room came the low, rhythmic murmur of Matteo's voice. He was standing by the cracked window, speaking in rapid, hushed Italian to someone on his secure satellite phone. Marco sat on the edge of the sagging sofa, reviewing financial spreadsheets on his illuminated tablet, the cold blue light casting sharp shadows across his face.

"Freeze all domestic accounts linked to the Vanguard subsidiaries," Matteo instructed into the phone, his tone absolute, leaving no room for argument or hesitation. "I want every single asset under Nico's direct control audited by sunrise. If he tries to move a single cent out of the New York branch, I want a red flag on my desk within five seconds. Do you understand me, Director?"

A pause, then a crisp acknowledgment from the other end. Matteo clicked the phone shut and slid it into his breast pocket. He turned around, running a hand through his dark hair, his jaw tight. He walked over to the kitchen archway and leaned against the frame, watching Elena in silence for a long moment.

"You should get some sleep," Matteo said quietly. "Sophie is asleep on the couch. I had Marco lay out a proper blanket."

"I can't sleep," Elena replied without looking up. Her finger traced the edge of an old concert ticket stub — Caruso Jazz Club, West 54th Street, Wednesday, October 14th. "Every time I close my eyes, I keep thinking about those six years. All those nights I sat in the dark wondering why you didn't call. Wondering if I was just a game to you. A weekend distraction for a rich man playing at being normal."

Matteo stepped into the kitchen, pulling out the second metal chair and sitting down opposite her. The chair groaned under his weight, a stark contrast to his usual environment of plush leather and polished mahogany. He reached across the table, his large hand hovering just above hers for a second before he gently rested his fingers over her knuckles. She didn't pull away, but her hand remained stiff, cold under his warmth.

"It wasn't a game, Elena," he said, his voice thick with a regret that had been festering for years. "From the very first night I heard you play that piano... you weren't a distraction. You were the only real thing in my life. My father had just passed, the board was tearing the company apart, and when I was with you... I didn't have to carry the weight of the Caruso name. I was just Matteo."

"And the moment things got complicated, you let your cousin erase me," she whispered, her gray eyes finally lifting to meet his. There was no anger in them now, only a profound, soul-deep exhaustion. "That's what hurts the most, Matteo. Not just that he lied, but that it was so easy for him to convince me you didn't care. Because deep down, part of me always knew who you were. A billionaire heir to a real estate dynasty. And I was just a girl teaching piano lessons to kids who couldn't afford sheet music."

"Listen to me," Matteo said, leaning forward, his voice fierce, dropping an octave as he captured her gaze entirely. "My grandfather built this empire on blood and concrete. My father maintained it with fear. I spent my entire life believing that love was a liability, a weakness that enemies exploit. Nico knew that about me. He played on the paranoia he helped me cultivate. But he made one fatal mistake."

Elena raised an eyebrow faintly. "And what was that?"

"He forgot who he was dealing with," Matteo said softly. "He thought he could steal my life, steal my family, and walk away clean. By sunrise, Nico won't just be stripped of his title. He'll find out what happens when you wake up a sleeping dragon."

Marco cleared his throat gently from the living room, breaking the intense focus between them. "Boss, you might want to see this. We just decrypted the secondary drive from Nico's personal server file that was mirrored on the Vanguard backup. It's not just financial fraud. There's a communications log regarding your father's estate."

Matteo stood up immediately, leaving the kitchen table and walking back into the living area. Elena followed closely behind, her steps hesitant but determined. She wrapped her worn cardigan tighter around her shoulders as she stood beside Matteo, looking down at the tablet screen.

Marco tapped the screen, bringing up a scanned document bearing an old signature — a signature that made Matteo’s breath catch.

"Your father’s final will and testament," Marco read aloud, scrolling down to a highlighted clause. "Look at the addendum dated three weeks before your father’s passing. It designates a secondary trust fund, independent of the primary corporate holdings, assigned directly to any direct descendant of Matteo Caruso. Valued at roughly forty million dollars."

Matteo stared at the document, his eyes narrowing as the pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. "Nico didn't just alter my personal life. He forged my father's execution docs. He hid the trust fund existence so that if I ever had a child... that child would never receive a cent of independent security."

"Which means," Marco added grimly, "Sophie was legally entitled to her family trust from the day she was born. Nico knew about Elena's pregnancy before you did. He intercepted the medical records from the private clinic where Elena went for her initial check-up — a clinic partially funded by a Caruso shell company."

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her face. "The receptionist at the clinic... she was so strange that day. She asked me to fill out a redundant form, and then she took my file into the back office for nearly an hour."

"Nico had spies embedded everywhere," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal whisper. He straightened up, his broad shoulders squaring as the corporate titan and the untouchable leader of the Caruso family fully emerged from beneath the surface of the grieving, shocked man. He looked at Marco. "Where is Nico right now?"

"According to the terminal logs and his credit card pings," Marco replied, tapping the tablet once more, "he's currently attending a high-society charity gala at the Mandarin Oriental. Celebrating his recent promotion to executive vice president of Caruso Holdings."

Matteo looked down at Elena, then over at Sophie, who was curled up peacefully on the old sofa, clutching her one-eyed teddy bear. He walked over, gently pulling the blanket higher over her small shoulders before turning back to Elena.

"Pack a bag," Matteo said quietly. "All of you. You're not staying in this apartment another minute."

May you like

"Where are we going?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"Home," Matteo said, his eyes hard as flint. "And then, we're going to a party."
