Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Horizon

The golden era of the Cole-Willis syndicate did not go unnoticed by the old guard of the underworld.

When a criminal empire modernizes, sheds its blood-soaked skin, and transforms into a clean, corporate monolith, it inevitably steps on the toes of men who believe power can only be measured by bodies in the street.

And the biggest obstacle left standing in the old guard's path was not Vincent Cole.

It was Morgan.

Three months after the boardroom coup, an encrypted intelligence report landed on Morgan’s desk at 6:00 a.m.

It wasn't sent via the internal server. It was slipped under the heavy oak double doors of the downtown office in a plain manila envelope—a classic calling card of the Syndicate of the Eastern Seaboard, an old-school cartel led by a ruthless patriarch named Salvatore Rossi.

Morgan opened the envelope with a silver letter opener.

Inside was a single photograph of her apartment building downtown, with a red X spray-painted across the front entrance. Beneath the photo was a handwritten note in Italian: Tell your lapdog his time is up. The girl dies tonight.

Morgan didn't panic. Her heart didn't race.

She walked over to the coffee maker, poured herself a fresh cup of black coffee, and carried the note straight to Vincent’s private office.

Vincent was already behind his desk, reviewing a shipment manifest. He looked up the moment Morgan entered, immediately reading the cold, calculating expression on her face.

“What is it?” Vincent asked, standing up instantly.

Morgan dropped the manila envelope onto his desk.

Vincent looked at the photograph. He looked at the note.

The temperature in the room plummeted. The dark, lethal aura that had made Vincent Cole a legend in the underworld flared to life in his eyes—a terrifying, predatory focus that hadn't surfaced since the day of the boardroom shooting.

“Rossi,” Vincent growled, his jaw tightening until the bones stood out white. “The old man thinks he can muscle in on our Pacific shipping routes by targeting you.”

“He’s playing a very expensive game of chess with the wrong player,” Morgan said calmly, leaning against the desk, crossing her arms. “He assumes I’m just a soft civilian asset he can leverage to break your focus.”

“I’m going to tear his operation down to the ground,” Vincent said, reaching for his holster in the top drawer of his desk. “I’ll send a strike team to his New York headquarters tonight—”

“No,” Morgan interrupted, her voice sharp and absolute.

Vincent froze, looking up at her in surprise. “Morgan, this man just threatened your life.”

“Which means he made it personal,” Morgan corrected, a cold, dangerous smile touching her lips—a smile that looked terrifyingly similar to Vincent’s own. “And a military strike gives him warning. We aren’t going to bomb his headquarters, Vincent. We are going to bankrupt him by noon, seize his port assets in Panama, and hand his entire criminal portfolio over to the federal authorities on a silver platter before he even realizes his bank accounts have been frozen.”

Vincent stared at her, completely transfixed.

For a fraction of a second, he wasn't looking at his COO. He was looking at the woman who had locked herself in a suite and calmly sewn up his side while the world burned around them.

“You are terrifying, Morgan Willis,” Vincent murmured, a slow, dark grin breaking across his face.

“I learned from the best,” Morgan replied smoothly. “Now, hand me my laptop. We have an empire to dismantle.”
