Chapter 9 - The Final Protocol

The night air over the Moretti estate was dead silent. The threat had come and gone in less than an hour; Vince and his elite security team had swept the surrounding blocks with ruthless efficiency, dismantling the Maroni syndicate’s local reconnaissance cell before they even realized their communications had been compromised. By midnight, the perimeter was locked down tighter than a federal vault, secure against any external shadow.

Inside the mansion, the lights were dimmed to a warm, amber glow.

Gabriel sat in his second-floor study, the brushed-aluminum monitor glowing before him on the mahogany desk. But for the first time in weeks, he wasn't watching the feeds to check for intruders or monitor protocols.

He was watching the playroom.

On the screen, Emma was sitting on the thick wool rug. Sophia was fast asleep beside her, clutching her plush unicorn with one arm.

Lily was standing.

She wasn't using the wooden training walker. The heavy wooden apparatus had been pushed back against the far wall, out of the way. She wasn't wearing the stiff canvas brace either; her bare legs were free, strong, and steady.

Gabriel stood up from his leather chair, his heart pounding against his ribs with a force he hadn't felt since his wedding day. He walked out of his study, his heavy footsteps echoing silently down the vaulted hallway, and descended the grand staircase toward the east wing.

He didn't run. He walked with the measured, deliberate pace of a man who had finally learned how to face his fears.

As he reached the open doorway of the playroom, he stopped.

Emma was kneeling on the rug, a few feet away from Lily, holding out her hands with a bright, encouraging smile.

"Come on, Lily," Emma whispered, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "Just four steps. Just show your dad that the wheels don't get to win today."

Lily stood tall. Her small chest rose and fell with a steady, determined rhythm. Her hazel eyes locked onto Emma’s hands, then drifted past Emma—past the toys, past the padded floor—and landed directly on the doorway.

She saw Gabriel.

For a second, Gabriel froze, terrified that his shadow would make her shrink back, that his intimidating presence would trigger the old, protective paralysis.

Instead, Lily’s small face broke into a wide, radiant smile.

"Daddy," she whispered.

And then, Lily moved.

One step. Her right foot came forward, steady and firm against the wool rug.

Two steps. Her left foot followed, her balance holding true without a single wobble.

Three steps. Her small arms reached out toward the tall, dark-suited man standing in the doorway.

Four steps.

With a joyful little cry, Lily crossed the remaining distance and crashed straight into Gabriel’s legs.

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees on the hard marble floor, heedless of his expensive suit, heedless of his reputation, heedless of the cold world outside. He wrapped his massive, powerful arms around his daughter, lifting her up against his chest as hot, silent tears finally spilled over his lashes.

He buried his face in her fine chestnut hair, holding her so tight he could feel the frantic, beautiful rhythm of her beating heart.

"I've got you," Gabriel choked out, his voice thick with uncontainable emotion. "I've got you, my sweet girl. I'm never letting go."

Across the room, Emma watched them from the rug, a soft, radiant smile touching her lips as a single tear traced down her cheek. She started to stand up, quietly gathering her things, assuming her work here was finished—that a monster-turned-father and his daughters no longer needed a maid from Queens.

"Emma."

She stopped, turning back toward the doorway.

Gabriel was still holding Lily tightly with one arm, but his other hand reached out across the space between them, his dark eyes looking at her with a depth of raw, unmistakable devotion that defied every rule, every wall, and every protocol he had ever built.

"Stay," Gabriel said, his voice ringing softly through the quiet house. "Not as staff. Not as help. Stay... because this house was never a home until you walked through the door."

May you like

Emma looked at him, then down at Lily, who was now reaching one small hand out toward Emma’s fingers with a bright, fearless grin.

Slowly, Emma smiled back, crossed the room, and knelt down right beside them on the floor.
