Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Hallway

By Thursday night, the rain had cleared, leaving the New York air crisp, smelling of wet asphalt and distant river salt. The mansion was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of the HVAC system and the occasional creak of old oak floorboards settling in the east wing.

Gabriel sat in his study, working through a stack of international logistics manifests, when a soft movement on the hallway camera caught his eye.

He looked up at the monitor.

Emma was walking down the vaulted corridor carrying a basket of folded laundry. Her movements were unhurried, but there was a subtle tension in her shoulders. She stopped near the tall grandfather clock outside the nursery and paused, looking down at her hands.

Gabriel’s hand hovered over the audio feed button. He clicked it open.

At first, there was only the faint rustle of fabric. Then, Emma’s voice—soft, nearly a whisper, spoken to herself in the empty hallway.

"Just a little longer," she murmured, her eyes cast downward toward the polished marble floor. "Just need to keep things steady until the end of the month. Keep your head down, Emma. Don't let them see the cracks."

Gabriel froze.

Keep your head down.

It wasn't the voice of a simple domestic servant content with her station. It was the voice of someone hiding—someone running from something, or someone, and counting down the days until she could disappear again.

His chest tightened. The old, hard instincts—the survival mechanisms of a man who ruled a syndicate and trusted no one—surfaced instantly.

She’s hiding something, the voice inside him whispered. A debt? A past? An enemy?

He reached for his phone, his thumb poised over Vince’s speed dial. A single command from Gabriel Moretti could have every detail of Emma Brooks’s life laid bare across his desk by midnight: bank records, phone logs, past addresses, encrypted messages, personal associations. He could pull her entire history apart like a cheap watch to see every gear and spring.

He looked back at the monitor.

On the screen, Emma had finished whispering to herself. She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, adjusted the basket of laundry in her arms, and walked calmly toward the linen closet. Her face was serene, composed, carrying the quiet dignity of a woman who faced her private storms alone.

Gabriel’s thumb remained frozen above the phone screen.

He remembered Lily’s face when Emma removed the heavy canvas brace. He remembered the sound of his daughter’s unassisted step on the wool rug. He remembered the unvarnished truth in Emma's eyes when she told him, “I know the difference between what a job title says and what a house actually needs.”

Slowly, deliberately, Gabriel pulled his hand back from the phone.

He didn't call Vince. He didn't order a deeper investigation. He leaned back in his leather chair, watching the silent screen as Emma closed the linen closet door and walked back toward the staff quarters.

"Keep your secrets, Emma," Gabriel muttered into the empty study. "Just don't break my daughters' hearts."
