Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The transition was not seamless. In the criminal underworld, any sudden change in a boss's behavior was scrutinized. When word filtered down through the ranks that Vincent Torino had pulled a common maid from her duties, raised her pay, and hired a top-tier medical team to treat her respiratory illness, whispers began to circulate.

In the dark, smoke-filled backroom of The Velvet Lounge, a high-end club owned by the family, Vincent’s top captains gathered. Marco, the man who had almost discovered Isabella in the pantry, stood near the door, his arms crossed.

"The Boss is getting soft," muttered Silvio, a ruthless underboss who managed the docks. "He’s spending syndicate money on a servant and her brat. If the Marcone family hears about this, they’ll think the old lion has lost his teeth."

The heavy oak door swung open, and Vincent walked in. The room went dead silent instantly. The aura of absolute authority he carried hadn't diminished an inch. He took his seat at the head of the table, poured himself two fingers of scotch, and looked directly at Silvio.

"You have something you want to say to my face, Silvio?" Vincent asked, his voice low, vibrating with a dangerous calm.

Silvio swallowed hard but tried to maintain his posture. "We’re just worried about security, Boss. The Marcones are pushing our territory on the West Side. We need focus. Caring for a maid's family... it looks like a vulnerability."

Vincent set his glass down with a soft clink that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room.

"Thirty-five years ago," Vincent began, his eyes scanning every man in the room, "my mother died of an infection in a basement apartment not five blocks from where Carmen Martinez lives. She died because we didn't have money for medicine, and because the local padrone threw us out into the snow for being a day late on rent. I swore when I built this empire that no one under my roof would ever suffer that indignity again."

He leaned forward, his gaze locking onto Silvio like a predator sizing up prey. "Carmen Martinez is under my roof. Her daughter is under my protection. If any man in this room, or any man in this city, thinks that makes me soft, let him come and try his luck. I will bury him beneath the very marble they clean."

No one breathed. Marco shifted his weight, a subtle nod of respect passing through his features. They remembered who they were dealing with. Vincent Torino hadn't gone soft; he had found a purpose beyond survival.
