Chapter 7 - The Disappearance of Lucian Moretti

A Desperate SearchThe words hung in the air of the quiet library reading room like a tolling bell.

“What do you mean, he disappeared?” Naomi asked, her voice dropping an octave, the professional composure slipping just enough to reveal the sudden, sharp spike of adrenaline in her veins.

“Three days ago, Lucian left his private residence in the northern suburbs to meet with a representative of an international shipping firm regarding a legitimate maritime venture,” Vance explained, his tone urgent. “He never arrived at the meeting. His car was found abandoned near the rail yards on the industrial south side, unlocked and with his phone inside. There was no sign of a struggle, but local informants report that Dante Rossi’s remaining loyalists were seen in the area.”

Naomi stood up slowly from her chair, the leather journal sliding onto the floor.

For two years, she had built an independent life, convinced that she had cleanly severed every tie to the dangerous world Lucian inhabited. She had divorced him quietly, secured her son's future, and established a sanctuary built on facts and autonomy. Yet hearing that Lucian was missing stirred something unexpected within her—not love, perhaps, but a profound, unshakeable sense of justice and shared history.

“Why would Dante take him?” Naomi asked. “If Dante believes Lucian has the archive, torturing him won't bring it back unless Dante knows where it’s hidden.”

“Dante believes Lucian entrusted the physical backups to someone close to him,” Vance said, looking directly into her eyes. “Someone who knows how to hide data better than any mob accountant.”

Naomi stared at the brown envelope on the table. She reached out, picked it up, and slid open the flap. Inside was a single flash drive and a handwritten note in Lucian’s precise, elegant cursive:

Naomi, If you are reading this, it means Dante has finally made his move, and my precautions failed. I never intended to drag you or Leo back into this shadow. But I want you to know that the archive you built remains the only leverage powerful enough to stop him permanently. Protect our son. Do whatever you must. — L.

Naomi folded the note, sliding it into her blazer pocket, and slipped the flash drive into her palm.

“Where is Dante holding him?” she asked.

Vance blinked in surprise. “Mrs. Moretti, this isn't a library research problem. This is an armed faction of violent men operating out of an abandoned grain elevator on the Calumet River. You can't just walk in there.”

“I didn't say I was going to walk in there,” Naomi said, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying brilliance. “I said: Where is Dante holding him?”

The Blueprint of a RescueTwo hours later, Naomi was back in the kitchen on Lincoln Avenue. Leo was fast asleep upstairs under Patricia’s watchful care.

Naomi sat at the kitchen island with her laptop open, connecting the flash drive Vance had given her. It didn't just contain financial records; it contained real-time satellite telemetry and encrypted communication logs from the private security firm Vance operated. Using her old librarian skills—cross-referencing industrial zoning permits, power grid fluctuations, and cellular ping data—she pinpointed the exact location within twenty minutes: the derelict Calumet Grain Elevator on the south side of Chicago.

She didn't call the police. Standard police response times in the industrial sector were too slow, and Dante had corrupt officers on his payroll who would tip him off before sirens even crossed the city limits.

Instead, she picked up her phone and dialed a number she hadn't called in three years.

“Vance,” a crisp voice answered on the second ring.

“I have the location and the telemetry,” Naomi said. “You have the tactical team and the operational clearance. Are you ready to go to work?”

May you like

A low, approving chuckle came through the speaker. “What do you need us to do, Mrs. Moretti?”

“We aren't going to rescue him by breaking down doors, Vance,” Naomi said calmly, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she routed a high-priority data packet directly into the regional cellular network. “We’re going to dismantle Dante’s communications, lock down every exit route, and let the authorities walk into a trap that Dante himself didn't know he was building.”
