Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Whispers in the HarborTwo years passed with the quiet grace of a receding tide.

In the sunlit nursery of the Lincoln Avenue home, two-year-old Leo chased a wooden toy train across the hardwood floor, his infectious laughter echoing off the freshly painted walls. Naomi watched him from the armchair, a cup of coffee in her hand and a leather-bound journal open on her lap. She had returned to the Chicago Metropolitan Library part-time, heading their rare manuscripts department—a role that allowed her to use her meticulous research skills without the crushing weight of corporate espionage.

Outside the secure walls of their domestic peace, however, the underworld of Chicago was experiencing a violent tremor.

True to Lucian Moretti’s final warning, Dante Rossi’s aggressive mismanagement of the North Harbor Circle had triggered a catastrophic collapse. Without Lucian’s political connections and careful financial laundering, the federal task force had swooped in six months prior, arresting half the syndicate's leadership and seizing millions in illicit assets. Dante himself had gone into hiding, hunted by both federal agents and rival syndicates who blamed him for the wholesale destruction of the city’s organized crime network.

One evening in late September, Naomi received an unexpected visitor at the library.

She was closing the rare manuscripts section when the security guard at the front desk buzzed through. “Ms. Moretti, there’s a man downstairs asking to speak with you. He says it’s urgent regarding your former husband.”

Naomi’s heart skipped a beat, but her voice remained steady. “Did he give a name?”

“He said his name is Marcus Vance. He claims he’s an old associate of Lucian’s.”

Naomi frowned. She knew every major player in the North Harbor Circle from her digital archive, and Marcus Vance was not among them.

“Send him up to the second-floor reading room, Frank. And stay close.”

Ten minutes later, a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit walked into the quiet reading room. He looked less like a mafia enforcer and more like a corporate litigator, but the hardened alertness in his eyes gave him away.

“Mrs. Moretti,” the man said, nodding respectfully as he stopped a few feet away. “Thank you for seeing me on such short notice.”

“You have five minutes, Mr. Vance,” Naomi said, not bothering to invite him to sit down. “And then I call security.”

“I’ll keep it brief,” Vance said, stepping closer and placing a sealed, plain brown envelope on the mahogany table. “I work for the private security firm Lucian Moretti retained when he stepped down from the Circle. My job was to ensure that his withdrawal remained clean and that his former associates didn't trace his personal assets.”

“If Lucian wanted to send me a message, he knows my address,” Naomi replied coldly.

“Lucian didn't send me,” Vance said softly. “Dante Rossi is desperate. He knows the federal net is closing in, and he believes that the missing digital archive—the one that exposed the entire financial architecture of the Circle—was handed over to the feds by Lucian as part of a secret plea deal.”

“And was it?” Naomi asked, her face a mask of absolute calm.

“No,” Vance said. “Lucian didn't hand it over. But Dante doesn't know that. Dante believes that whoever holds that archive holds the key to his survival—or his destruction. And right now, Dante’s people are looking for the person who built it.”

Naomi stared at the man, the gravity of the situation settling over her like a heavy winter coat. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because Lucian disappeared three days ago,” Vance said quietly.
