Chapter 6 - The Siege of Kane House

The attack came at midnight.
A storm was raging over Lake Michigan, driving torrential rain against the reinforced glass windows of Kane House. Thunder rattled the foundations, drowning out the sound of the three dark SUVs that smashed through the outer iron gates.
Inside the mansion’s lower-level medical bay—a state-of-the-art facility Dominic had built beneath the east wing—Avery was ready.
She had shed her maid's apron, rolled up her sleeves, and prepped four surgical tables with IV lines, bandages, and plasma bags. Leo stood by the heavy steel door, an assault rifle held firmly against his chest, his eyes darting between the security monitors and the hallway.
Gunfire erupted above them.
The muted thud-thud-thud of heavy caliber weapons echoed through the concrete floorboards. Avery didn't flinch. Five years in an inner-city emergency room had hardened her nerves to chaos. When the doors burst open ten minutes later, bringing in the first wounded guard, she moved with lethal efficiency.
"Shrapnel wound to the shoulder," she commanded, taking the guard by his vest and guiding him onto the bed. "Leo, hold pressure here! Don't let go!"
For two hours, the basement became an engine of survival. Avery patched up four guards, stopping bleeding, stitching torn flesh, and giving orders with absolute authority. The guards, hardened men who usually scoffed at civilian staff, obeyed her every command without question.
Through the security monitors mounted on the wall, Avery watched the battle unfold on the upper floors.
Dominic was a force of nature.
He moved through the dark hallways of his mansion like a shadow, taking down Marcus’s former lieutenants with ruthless precision. He didn't fire wildly; every shot was calculated, every move designed to protect his home and the people inside it.
Then, on Monitor 4, Avery saw something that made her heart freeze.
A heavy-set man in a tactical vest—Victor, Marcus’s former right-hand man—was slipping through the rear entrance near the library. He wasn't heading toward Dominic.
He was heading toward the central control room, holding a heavy detonator in his hand.
"He's going to blow the power grids," Leo growled, seeing it too. "If he cuts the power, the medical bay locks down automatically, and the fire suppression gas will flood this level!"
"Can you reach Dominic?" Avery demanded.
"Comms are jammed!" Leo cursed, slamming his fist against the console. "I have to go up there."
"No," Avery said, her nurse's eyes scanning the monitor. "Your shoulder is torn open, Leo. You can barely hold that rifle. You'll die before you reach the stairs."
"I have to protect you!"
"I'm coming with you," Avery said, grabbing a heavy brass surgical tray from the table.

"Avery, no!"
"I'm not sitting in a locked box waiting to be gassed, Leo!" she snapped, her brown eyes blazing. "We take the service elevator. Now!"
