Chapter 5 - The Enemy at the Gate

Dominic’s posture transformed instantly. The gentle, warm light in his eyes vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating chill that made entire syndicates tremble.
He stood up smoothly, adjusting his robe over his broad chest. "Speak."
"They know Avery was the one treating our guys last night," Leo said, casting a quick, protective glance toward Avery. "And someone inside the medical supply chain leaked that she found the old ledger in your study. They think the ledger contains the access codes to Marcus's hidden offshore accounts—over forty million dollars."
Avery sat up straight in the bed, pulling the covers to her chest. "The ledger? It's just accounting records from ten years ago!"
"They don't know that," Dominic said coldly. He turned back to Avery, his eyes softening for a split second as he took her hand again. "You're staying here. In this room. It's safe."
"Dominic, wait," Avery said, her fingers tightening around his. It was the first time she had called him by his first name, and both of them felt the shift in the air. "They came here last night with automatic weapons. If they come back—"
"If they come back, they die," Dominic said simply. "Nobody touches what is mine."
What is mine.
The words echoed in Avery's chest, sending a shiver down her spine. It wasn't a statement of ownership; it was a vow of protection.
Dominic turned to Leo. "Lock down the perimeter. Call in the perimeter guards from the south docks. I want every inch of this property covered. And bring Dr. Harris back up here to check on Avery."
"I don't need a doctor, I am a medical professional," Avery interjected, sliding her legs over the side of the bed. Her body still ached, but the adrenaline pulsing through her veins wiped away the lingering fatigue. "If those men come back, your guards are going to get hurt again. You need someone who knows how to run a triage station."
Dominic turned back to her, frowning. "You are not working tonight. You almost collapsed from exhaustion."
"I collapsed because I hadn't eaten!" Avery snapped, standing up on steady feet. She was shorter than him by a foot, her full, curvy frame standing right in front of his towering muscle, but she didn't back down an inch. "You have thirty armed men on this property, Dominic Kane, but not one of them knows how to treat an arterial bleed without fainting. If there’s going to be a fight, I'm staying in the medical bay."
Dominic stared down at her. For three years, he had seen her as a quiet, careful woman who moved through his house like a ghost. Now, standing in her wrinkled maid's uniform, brown curls wild around her shoulders, her dark eyes flashing with fiery determination, she looked like a queen commanding her court.
A slow, dark smile spread across Dominic's face.
"God," he murmured under his breath, "you are magnificent."
He stepped closer, cupping her face in his large hand. His thumb traced her bottom lip gently. "Fine. You run the medical station. But Leo stays at your side. If anyone gets past the outer gate, he pulls you into the panic room. Do you understand me, Avery?"
Avery swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs—not from fear, but from the electric heat of his hand on her skin.
"I understand," she whispered.

Dominic leaned down, his lips brushing against her forehead in a kiss so soft, so fierce with promise, that it stole the air right out of her lungs.
"Stay safe, my sweet maid," he murmured. "I have a house to clean."
