Chapter 9 - The Notebook's Final Page

Autumn arrived, painting the Hudson Valley in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold. The crisp morning air carried the scent of woodsmoke and falling leaves.
The transformation of the Moretti estate was now complete. The cold, sterile mansion had become a warm, chaotic home filled with the sound of running feet, shouted laughter, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals drifting from the kitchen.
Late one evening, after the boys had finally fallen asleep, Gabriel sat in his study reviewing a final set of international contracts.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
"Enter," Gabriel said.
Emma walked in, holding a steaming mug of tea. She looked relaxed, wearing a soft cream-colored sweater and dark trousers. She walked over to the desk and placed the mug beside his computer.
"You're working late again," she noted gently.
"Just tying up loose ends," Gabriel replied, leaning back in his leather chair and rubbing the bridge of his nose. "The London acquisition is finally closed. Which means... my schedule is entirely open for the next three weeks."
Emma smiled, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. "Is that a threat or a promise?"
Gabriel reached into the top drawer of his desk and pulled out the worn, leather-bound journal that had started it all—Isabella’s private notebook. He placed it gently in the center of the desk between them.
"I read the final entry," Gabriel said quietly, his voice losing its professional edge. "The page you hadn't gotten to yet when I walked into the nursery that night."
Emma’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a look of tender vulnerability. She looked down at the leather cover. "Did you?"
"She wrote about you," Gabriel said, looking up into Emma's warm, hazel eyes. "Even when she was slipping away from this world, she worried about you. She wrote: 'My sister carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, just like I used to. I pray she finds a place where she can finally rest. I pray she finds someone who loves her not for what she pretends to be, but for the beautiful, chaotic soul she is.'"
Gabriel stood up from his desk, walking slowly around until he was standing right in front of Emma. He reached out and gently took her hands in his. Her fingers were warm, steady, and fit perfectly into his own.
"She found that place," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "And I found the person who brought my sons—and my life—back from the dead."
May you like
Emma looked up at him, tears welling in her eyes, but a radiant, unbroken smile lit up her face. "You took a big risk letting me stay, Gabriel Moretti. I'm loud, I'm messy, and I don't follow corporate protocols."
"Good," Gabriel murmured, leaning down and pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her forehead. "Because corporate protocols nearly destroyed everything that mattered to me. I'm never letting you go."
