Chapter 8 - Building a Foundation of Mud and Laughter

Spring melted into a vibrant, sun-drenched summer across the Hudson Valley.

The Moretti estate underwent a silent, radical transformation. The heavy iron gates remained locked against the outside world, but inside, the high walls were no longer a prison.

For the first time in his life, Gabriel Moretti began missing flights. Not because of business crises, but because Lucas had built an elaborate Lego castle in the foyer and demanded his father judge the structural integrity of the drawbridge before he left for Manhattan. Not because of logistics failures, but because Liam refused to go down for his afternoon nap unless Gabriel read him a story about space pirates.

And Emma was at the very center of it all.

She hadn't tried to replace Isabella. She didn't pretend to be the perfect, polished matriarch the high-society galas demanded. She was simply Emma—warm, chaotic, fiercely protective, and endlessly patient.

One Saturday afternoon, the sprawling back lawn looked less like a manicured billionaire's estate and more like a disaster zone. A massive blue tarp had been laid out across the grass, covered in tubs of colorful finger paint, buckets of soapy water, and old bedsheets.

Gabriel stood on the back terrace, wearing a plain black t-shirt and dark jeans—an outfit that would have given his corporate board a collective heart attack. He held a garden hose in one hand, watching the chaos unfold below.

"Don't you dare, Leo!" Emma shrieked, laughing as the six-year-old charged toward her with both hands dripping in bright yellow paint.

"Target acquired!" Leo shouted, slamming his yellow palms directly onto Emma's white cotton apron, leaving two giant handprints across her chest.

Lucas and Liam immediately joined the ambush, charging forward with blue and red paint smeared across their cheeks like brave tribal warriors. Emma collapsed backward into the grass, pretending to surrender as the three boys piled on top of her, howling with laughter.

Gabriel watched them, a genuine, unforced smile touching his lips.

Suddenly, three pairs of mischievous eyes turned away from Emma and locked onto the man standing on the terrace.

"Get him!" Lucas screamed.

Gabriel’s eyes widened slightly. "Oh, no."

Before he could turn and retreat into the house, three small torpedoes came flying up the stone steps, followed closely by Emma, who was laughing so hard she could barely catch her breath.

"Gabriel Moretti!" Emma called out, her eyes sparkling with playful defiance. "You can't hide behind a suit anymore! Show us your battle strategy!"

Gabriel raised the garden hose with a mock-serious expression. "You are trespassing on restricted territory, troops. Surrender immediately."

"Never!" Leo yelled.

Gabriel turned the nozzle, sending a gentle, refreshing spray of cool water arc across the terrace. The boys shrieked and squealed, dodging the water as they rushed him. Before Gabriel could react, Emma darted forward, grabbed the end of the hose, and redirected the stream straight up into the air, creating a sparkling cascade of water droplets that caught the afternoon sun like a shower of diamonds.

Gabriel stumbled backward, slipping slightly on the wet stone, and tumbled right down into the grass beside Emma.

The garden fell into a joyful, breathless silence, broken only by the chirping of robins and the heavy sound of Gabriel’s own laughter—a sound he hadn't made in years.

Emma sat beside him in the wet grass, her hair wild, her apron covered in multi-colored paint, and her chest rising and falling as she caught her breath. She turned to look at him, her gaze soft and affectionate.

"You're getting better at this dad thing," she murmured.

May you like

Gabriel turned his head, looking down at her. The playful teasing melted away from his dark eyes, replaced by a deep, quiet intensity. He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing a streak of blue paint off her cheek.

"I had a very good teacher," Gabriel said softly.
