Chapter 6 - A NEW MORNING

The sun rose over Lake Michigan the next morning, painting the Chicago skyline in shades of pink and gold.

In the high-walled private suite at St. Jude's Hospital, Clara awoke to the soft hum of medical monitors and the scent of fresh roses filling the room. Her fever had broken. The intravenous antibiotics and proper nutrition had already brought a flush of healthy color back to her cheeks.

Beside her bed, sitting in a plush armchair, was Ethan. He was still wearing his suit trousers, but his jacket was off, his sleeves rolled up. In his lap slept Lily, curled into a ball, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket Ethan had brought from his apartment.

Clara watched them for a long time, tears quietly slipping down her cheeks. It felt like a dream—a fragile illusion that might shatter if she blinked too hard.

Lily stirred, opening her large silver-gray eyes. She rubbed her face and looked up at Ethan, who gently stroked her messy hair.

"Morning, kiddo," Ethan whispered warmly.

"Did I sleep a long time?" Lily asked softly. She looked over at the bed and her face lit up. "Mom! You look better!"

"I feel better, baby," Clara said, her voice stronger than it had been in years. She extended her arm, and Lily scrambled out of the chair to crawl carefully onto the bed, burying her head against Clara's chest.

Ethan stood up and stepped closer to the bed, looking down at the two of them. "The doctors say Clara will need a few weeks of rest and physical therapy, but she's going to make a full recovery."

Clara looked at Ethan, her eyes filled with complex emotions—gratitude, relief, and remaining traces of past pain. "Ethan... what happens now? We can't just pretend the last eight years didn't happen. We live in different worlds."

Ethan took a seat on the edge of the mattress, taking Clara's hand in his right hand and resting his left hand on Lily's head.

"The world I was living in was empty, Clara," Ethan said honestly. "I spent eight years building towers and counting numbers because I thought there was nothing else left for me. I was wrong. My father built a fortress of lies to keep us apart, but that fortress is gone now. I'm not asking you to forget the past overnight. I'm asking you to let me rebuild what was stolen from us."

Lily looked up between them, her silver eyes darting from her mother to Ethan. "Are you my dad?" she asked plainly.

The room went completely silent. Ethan felt his heart stop. He looked at Clara, who gave him a tearful, encouraging nod.

Ethan looked down at the little girl, his throat tight. "Yes, Lily. I am your dad. And I am so, so sorry it took me so long to find you."

May you like

Lily looked at him thoughtfully for a moment. Then, with the unvarnished logic of an eight-year-old, she said, "That's okay. You came just in time. We really needed that medicine."

Ethan couldn't help it—he broke into a laugh that ended in a tearful sigh, pulling both of them into a tight, warm embrace.
