Chapter 4 - THE BASEMENT APARTMENT

The building was a dilapidated tenement house that time and the city had forgotten. The front steps were cracked, and the hallway smelled of damp mold, stale cooking oil, and old cold.

Lily led Ethan down a narrow flight of wooden stairs into the dark basement corridor. She stopped at a door with peeling green paint and the number 1B scribbled in marker.

"Mom?" Lily called out as she pushed the door open. "I'm back! And I brought a helper!"

Ethan stepped over the threshold and halted. The room was tiny, illuminated by a single bare lightbulb hanging from a exposed wire. A small electric heater buzzed weakly in the corner, doing little to ward off the chill seeping through the brick walls. On a narrow bed covered in faded quilts lay a woman.

She was frail, her cheeks sunken, but her golden hair—though dull now—and the soft line of her jaw were unmistakable.

"Clara..." Ethan breathed, the name ripping from his lungs.

The woman on the bed turned her head slowly, her weak eyes trying to focus through the dim light. When her gaze finally rested on the man standing in her doorway—dressed in custom wool, holding her daughter's bag of cans—her eyes dilated in sheer shock.

"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice a fragile raspy breath. She tried to sit up, but a harsh coughing fit seized her, causing her to double over.

Ethan dropped the bag of cans and rushed across the small room, catching her shoulders gently. "Clara, don't move. Lie down."

"Ethan... how... what are you doing here?" Clara gasped, tears instantly brimming in her pale blue eyes. She looked from Ethan to Lily, panic flashing across her face. "Lily... go to the bathroom and wash your hands, sweetheart. Give us a minute."

Lily looked confused but obeyed, shutting the small wooden door behind her.

Ethan sat on the edge of the mattress, his hands trembling as he held Clara’s thin, cold hands. "I saw her, Clara. I saw her on the street. I saw her eyes. She has my eyes."

Clara pulled her hands away slightly, turning her face toward the water-stained wall. "You left us, Ethan. Your family... they made it very clear that I had no place in your world. Your father told me you agreed to send me away. He gave me a check and told me if I ever came near you again, he’d ruin my family."

Ethan felt as if he had been struck by lightning. The dark realization of his father's betrayal hit him like a physical blow. "My father lied to you, Clara," Ethan said, his voice choking with emotion. "I never knew you were pregnant! When you disappeared, I searched for you for two years! My father told me you took a settlement and moved to Europe! I hated you for leaving me... until today."

Clara turned back to look at him, searching his face for any sign of deceit. She saw only profound grief and raw truth in his gray eyes. "You... you didn't know?"

"I swear on my life, Clara," Ethan wept, tears finally slipping down his face for the first time in twenty years. "I never knew."
