Chapter 6 - Awakening on the Seventh Floor

The executive suite on the seventh floor of Mercy General looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a hospital room. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping panoramic view of the city skyline, now glittering with evening lights. A plush velvet sofa sat in the corner, and a basket of fresh lilies filled the air with a clean, sweet fragrance.

Anne Miller stirred slowly against the crisp white pillows.

Her head throbbed as if a drum were beating inside her skull. Every breath felt like drawing fire across her ribs. She blinked heavy eyelids open, squinting against the soft lamplight.

“Mommy!”

A small blur of pink rushed across the room. Before Anne could even process where she was, tiny arms wrapped gently around her neck, careful not to hit her bandaged side.

“Sarah?” Anne rasped, her voice dry and cracked. “Sweetheart... what happened? Where are we?”

“We’re in a big hotel room, Mommy!” Sarah cried happily, burying her face in Anne’s shoulder. “And a nice man with a silver coat and a black card saved you! He wouldn't let the doctors take my dolls!”

Anne winced, trying to prop herself up on her elbows, her mind racing back through the terror of the morning—the screech of tires, the sudden impact, the blinding lights of the ambulance.

“Sarah, what are you talking about?” Anne whispered, her heart spiking. “What man?”

From the shadow near the window, a tall figure stepped forward into the soft lamplight.

Anne froze.

The breath caught entirely in her throat. The sterile room seemed to vanish, replaced by the ghost of a shared past she had buried twenty years ago under layers of quiet survival and single motherhood.

“Hello, Anne,” Matthew Sullivan said softly, his voice trembling as he stopped at the foot of the bed. “It’s been a long time.”

Anne stared at him, her fingers clutching the hospital sheet. Her eyes moved from his mature, distinguished face down to the little girl hugging her waist. In that single, breathless second, the mathematical impossibility of their reunion dissolved into absolute, shattering clarity.

“Matthew...” she breathed, a tear slipping down her pale cheek. “What... what are you doing here?”
