Chapter 10 - A Happy Ending

Six months later, the estate on the edge of the botanical gardens was alive with the sound of laughter, music, and the quiet hum of a family truly whole.

The living room was bathed in the warm amber glow of a late afternoon sun. In the corner stood a magnificent grand piano, and beside it, a custom-built wooden display shelf proudly holding Sarah’s cardboard box treasures—the golden-haired doll, the floral-pillowcase rag doll named Luna, the cracked tea cups, and the beadless bracelet now properly restrung with a sparkling gold 'R' gleaming brightly in the center.

In the sunroom, Anne sat at her restored antique sewing machine, designing a new line of children's winter coats, her laughter blending with Matthew’s deep voice as he chased a giggling six-year-old girl across the hardwood floor.

Matthew caught Sarah mid-air, lifting her high above his head as she squealed with delight, before pulling her into a tight hug and pressing her against his chest. He set her down gently and walked over to Anne, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind as she looked up from her sewing table.

Anne leaned back against his chest, smiling as Matthew kissed the top of her head.

“You know,” Anne whispered, turning slightly in his embrace, “that box of dolls saved my life twice. Once because it brought you to the hospital... and once because it reminded you of what really matters.”

“It didn’t just save your life, Anne,” Matthew murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched Sarah carefully tucking Luna the rag doll into a miniature velvet bed. “It gave me back my soul.”

Outside, the autumn leaves drifted down in a golden shower, marking the beginning of a forever they would never take for granted again.
