Chapter 9 - THE RAIN CLEARS

The rain began to fall again, tapping softly against the reinforced glass of Rocco’s penthouse office. But this time, it felt different—not like the violent storm of a few weeks ago, but a gentle, cleansing rain.
The doorbell at Sarah Thompson’s house rang softly on a Saturday afternoon.
Sarah wiped her hands on her apron and walked to the front door, opening it with a calm, confident stride.
Standing on the porch was not a federal agent, and not a mafia enforcer. It was Julian, holding a large, beautifully wrapped gift box tied with a bright pink silk ribbon.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Thompson," Julian said with a warm, polite smile.
Sarah smiled back, opening the door wider. "Julian. Come in out of the rain."
Julian stepped inside, placing the large box gently on the dining table. "Mr. Moretti asked me to drop this off. He wanted to make sure Emma was fully prepared for her school’s upcoming spring art festival."
Emma came running down the hallway from her room, her eyes sparkling when she saw the box. "Is that for me?"
Julian chuckled. "Open it and see, Emma."
With eager fingers, Emma untied the pink ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside was a professional-grade artist’s easel, a complete set of oil paints, sketchbooks, and a brand-new pastel palette—everything a budding young artist could possibly dream of.
"Oh, wow!" Emma gasped, gently touching the wooden easel. "It's so beautiful! Thank you, Julian! Please tell Mr. Moretti thank you!"
"I will, Emma," Julian said warmly. He turned to Sarah, lowering his voice slightly. "And Mrs. Thompson... you don't need to worry about Agent Miller or the FBI anymore."
Sarah raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms gently. "What happened?"
"Let’s just say that Vincent Caruso tried to make a deal with federal prosecutors this morning," Julian explained calmly. "And during his deposition, he formally and publicly confessed under oath that Mr. Moretti had no knowledge of his unauthorized shakedown operations. In fact, Vincent admitted that Mr. Moretti was the one who personally shut down his entire illegal ring."
Sarah let out a long, quiet breath of relief. The invisible shadow that had lingered over her family ever since the FBI visit had finally lifted.
"Mr. Moretti really did protect us, didn't he?" Sarah murmured softly.
"Mr. Moretti protects what matters," Julian said, offering a respectful nod. "Have a wonderful weekend, Mrs. Thompson."
As Julian left, closing the door quietly behind him, Sarah walked over to the window. The rain was clearing up, and a magnificent, vibrant rainbow stretched across the gray sky, arching directly over the east side neighborhood.

Emma was already setting up her new easel in the living room, humming a cheerful tune as she dipped a paintbrush into a jar of water.
Sarah looked down at her coffee mug, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace. The world outside was still complex, dangerous, and full of shadows. But inside this house, love had won.
